After Darren's words, chaos ensued.
Everyone was talking, shouting, and questions were flying everywhere while disbelief painted everyone's faces. She was in shock, standing in the midst of it all, and her face was still as she tried to process the news. All this time, she had thought those marks were a curse. Something horrible. But in all reality, they held a blessing.
She had carried the soul of her mate's wolf and only when he marked her was it able to transfer to his body. That would explain why the marks hurt so bad when Cassius had first touched them, why there felt like a living presence lurked beneath her skin in the presence of her mate. It was the soul waking, after all these years of dormancy on her skin. Cassius might have even felt its calling, which explained why he was mesmerized by them and couldn't explain the feeling he felt.
Her attention slowly turned to Darren.
"How's that even possible?" Leroy questioned.
"I don't know!" Darren exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air, "But his scent is changing! He smells like us, like a wolf. That's the only reasonable explanation I can come up with because he's a half-blood," His eyes locked with hers, "Somehow, you gave him a wolf."
She looked down, that would explain why her mark disappeared and Cassius' eyes were white. It explained a lot of things actually. She was just trying to process it all and so was everyone else. They were still in disbelief, pacing the room and spewing more questions Darren couldn't answer.
All she wanted in that moment was to be with Cassius. Her heart longed for it and she needed a bit of calm silence. So, while everyone was distracted, she quietly left the room and headed upstairs. Her wolf stirred within her mind, whining in anticipation, and she opened the door to the medical room. She should have never left his side.
Cassius laid where she had last seen him, he hadn't moved a single finger. But, she could sense it. Like Darren had said, her mate's scent was different. She was relieved his skin wasn't as pale as it had been. He looked more alive this time and his breaths were even. She sighed and moved the side of the bed that had the most space.
She placed one hand on the bed, touching his hand that held the heart monitor finger-clip, and her skin seemed to sizzle. It was like a smoldering fire brought to life, she was addicted to his touch and she missed it. She wanted him to open his eyes and grin at her. Tell her everything would be okay. Kiss her forehead.
An ache blossomed in her heart. She didn't know how long this coma would last and neither did Darren. At this point, it was just a waiting game. Everything depended on Cassius. Whether he would wake up soon or he may sleep for a long time. She stared at his face. No, she decided, this man was a fighter. He had learned how to survive this cruel world with the biggest heart and as he had helped her, she would help him.
She slowly crawled onto the bed with him. It was just barely big enough for the both of them but she was small and she snuggled into his side perfectly. She placed her head on his chest and her hand across his ribs. She zoned out the heart monitors droning beep and listening to the actual beat of his heart. It was steady and it pushed blood through his veins every minute.
She closed her eyes with a soft exhale. A sense of peace washed over her. Just being by his side made her feel so much better. She hated to be separated from him. Their relationship had grown incredibly on trust and understanding and she felt as though nobody else could get her like he did. Cassius was a whole new level of understanding, warmth, and humor. He was the perfect combination of it all.
Her wolf seemed to grow anxious in her mind, pacing the barrier connecting them, and she knew that what Darren said was true. From the scent, to her wolf's response. She was sure her wolf could sense their mate's wolf. It may not be strong and sure yet but as their souls intertwined, Cassius was growing more and more wolf. An entire process was happening beneath the naked eye, making connections and creating a miracle.
She mindlessly drew circles on his arm with her finger, watching as his skin prickled with goosebumps. Even in a coma, his body unconsciously reacted to her. That was how deep their bond was. How far their loved reached. She smiled softly. Something told her he would be okay but she wasn't about to leave his side. She would be here for when he woke.
But, as she basked in his body warmth, she prayed. She focused all of her energy on him, trying to help him get better, and she uttered words under her breath. She knew that her very presence alone helped him, just as it did her, and she wasn't going to stop trying. He wouldn't have, if they had traded places, he probably would have never let go of her hand.
She clasped their hands together. Gently sweeping an unruly curl from his forehead with her other free hand. She had propped her chin on his shoulder, gazing at him, and watching for any signs of waking. Please wake up, she thought, imagining it reaching him in his dream world, and gently squeezed his hand.
After an incredibly long moment, his hand squeezed back.
