Chapter 3: The Art of Deception

When Saya arrived at her house an hour later she was surprised to find Logan sitting on her front porch looking decidedly ill-tempered. He glanced up, scowling at her as she approached and looked away disdainfully. Saya responded by raising an eyebrow and cocking her head to the side.

“Miss me already?” She teased, stopping in front of him. Logan growled and got to his feet, muttering darkly.

“Here.” He said tossing her a plate and folding his arms. Saya looked down at the plate with surprise and back up at him, amusement playing clearly across her face.

“I didn’t know you baked.” She said with mirth. Logan growled again, looking determinedly away from her, as an uncharacteristic blush spread across his cheeks.

“I don’t! My girlfriend made me bring them. She was gonna bring them by herself,  but when I told her it was probably my new student that moved into the new house she insisted I do it instead.” He seethed. Saya snickered and opened the door, holding it for him.

“You wanna come in?” She asked. Logan sighed and shrugged,

“Sure, why not.” He said bleakly. Saya rolled her eyes and followed him into the small but modern house.

Logan whistled as he looked around, glancing in the kitchen and out of a window into the backyard.

“Nice place, this must have cost a small fortune.”

“Thank you,” Saya said as she placed the plate on the kitchen counter and looked around herself. “It actually didn’t cost that much though. The materials used to build the house are actually pretty cheap. All the glass in the house, from the windows to the counters, are recycled, and the floors are bamboo which is much cheaper than other woods. The house itself hardly cost anything to build, it was the lot and built-ins that were expensive.”

“Hmm,” Logan said giving Saya a perplexed look. “You talk like you designed the house yourself.”

“Oh, I did.” She said offering him a cookie before taking a seat in the living room. “My dad was an architect and so I learned a bit about the trade from him. I mean, the plans weren’t good enough to give to a contractor and say ‘here, you figure it out’, but they were sufficient enough so that the real design ended up looking like my schematic.”

“I see, and ... where are your parents?” Logan asked, declining the cookie in favor of a cigarette. Saya paused, her silver eyes darkening slightly and turned away from him to look out the window.

 “They’re dead.” She said quietly.

“Oh, I ... I’m sorry to hear that. Was it ... recent?” He asked, uncomfortably. Empathy had never been his strong point and he wasn’t quite sure what to do, so he was relieved when Saya turned back to him with a solemn but composed expression.

“Well,” She said. “My mother died when I was young so I never really knew her, but my father only died recently. See, I wanted to go to the University of Asheville when I graduated high school, so my dad bought the lot and let me come up with the design. The idea was that when I went to UNCA I could live here instead of in the dorm, and until then we could use it as a vacation home. He died before it was completed though, but since it was all payed for I told them to finish the job. I decided to switch schools about a week after it was completed, I didn’t want to live in Chicago anymore, it was too painful.”

“Ah,” Logan said, looking out the window thoughtfully. “I see.”

“Mhmm...” Saya said, also looking out the window.

“Well,” She said after a minute or two had passed. “This isn’t awkward.”

“Huh? Oh, I’m sorry. I must have zoned out. This is quite a view you have.” Logan said nodding towards the window. Saya grinned broadly and nodded.

“Ya no kidding. Oh check this out,” She said getting up and walking towards the frost glass door and sliding it open to reveal an amazing view of the forest that was her backyard.

“The living room opens up on both sides so in the summer the breeze will go right through.”

Logan stood up and walked over to where Saya was standing and whistled again.

“Stunning.” He said, leaning back against the doorframe and admiring the view.

“Yup.” Saya said, smiling wistfully at the forest.

“Oh right! I just remembered, I’m supposed to give you my number and tell you not to hesitate to call if you need anything. My girlfriends words, not mine. Between the two of us this is probably a really bad idea, I can only imagine what would happen if the school heard about any of this, but I really didn’t feel like listening to her bitch about it.” Logan said reaching in his pocket and pulling out a scrap of paper with his number scribbled on it and handing it to her. Saya smirked at him and raised an eyebrow.

“She’s got you whipped hasn’t she?”

“I actually prefer handcuffs,” He said, smirking sadistically at her. His eyes shining with mirth. “But I take what I can get.” Saya nearly fell over, her shoulders shaking with laughter.

“I’d pay to see that.” She managed when she had finally stopped laughing. Logan’s smirk grew and he lit another cigarette, chuckling to himself.

“Well hell, I’m open-minded!” He said, waggling his eyebrows suggestively and winking at her. At this Saya burst into a new fit of laughter and a pretty blush spread across her face. Logan smiled to himself, proud that he had been the one to cause it, and looked serenely out the door. If there had ever been any doubt before it was gone now, Logan was certain, if the school ever found out about this, he would fired. And somehow, he was okay with that.
