[A/N: Right now I'm dedicating this chapter to an amazing author whose story actually inspired me to resume writing this one! Go to her profile and check out the story Test Me for a truly awesome and original read about a student/teacher relationship!]

Chapter 1: The Facts of Life

“Okay, my name is Saya Dwight. I was born in Vermont, but raised in Massachusetts. My father’s name is John Dwight, and my mothers name is Sarah Dwight. Both deceased. I have one half-brother but we are estranged and no pets. I turn 18 in October and currently live on my own. How am I doing so far?” The girl asked glancing at the piece of paper her companion held.

“Good,” The man said leaning back into his chair. “But it’s not going to be believable if you don’t put more emotion into it. And work on your background, it’s too grey, it sounds like your reading off a sheet of paper.”

“Oh don’t worry about that,” She said mimicking his actions. “You know stories are a specialty of mine, filling in the details won’t be a problem as long as I can keep my facts straight.”

“Well see to it that you do then, our help can only go so far, it’s up to you to make it work.” He said matter-of-factly.

“I know.” She said, her voice barely above a whisper. The man glanced at her over the edge of his paper and frowned,

“Misfortune is a reoccurring epidemic with no vaccine. It sweeps the land with every generation, and those that cannot withstand it perish just like in any other plague. It is the curse of the young to bare such burdens, because only with age can one develop immunity... my grandfather told me that after my mother died, it was a quote from one of his favorite books.” He said. The girl looked at him and stood up,

“Well, one of my favorite Washington Irving quotes is ‘Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune; but great minds rise above it.’”

“Hmm," The man said as he watched her pick up her book-bag and sling it over her shoulder. "Do you need a ride to school?”

“I’m supposed to be alone now remember? Wouldn’t it create problems if someone saw me being dropped off?” She said over her shoulder before opening the door and walking through it.

The man sighed, scowling at the plaque on his desk that read ‘U.S. Marshal’. She was right, it would have caused problems if she had accepted his offer and someone had seen him dropping her off. So she’d get a little wet riding her motorcycle to school in the rain, it was better than the alternative.

A/N: Okay, So I decided to keep this chapter short since nobody likes and overly long introduction chapter. The real stuff will start next chapter; HOWEVER, before you press the next button I recommend you read the overview I have placed below as it is crucial to understanding the story's background.

[The girl now known as Saya Dwight is in the Witness Protection Program after a tragedy befell her family and left her as the sole survivor. Her actual age is 20 though due to special circumstance involving the incident more extreme precautions had to be taken and so her birthday had to be changed along with her name and history when she was relocated. Formerly a Sophomore in college she has now been set back to her Junior Year of high school in the hopes that it will further cloak her identity from those that hunt her.]
