Chapter 15: The More Adventuresome Route

“Saya, Love, what are you doing?” Logan asked, yawning and rolling over to look at the small group of students gathered in a circle in the middle of the train compartment. The apparent leader of which, Saya, was sitting on his bed and shuffling a deck of cards skillfully.

“She’s robbing us blind, that’s what!” One of the boys, a tall pale boy named Samson, cried miserably. Logan grinned and let his head fall back onto his pillow.

“That’s because she’s cheating.” He muttered, yawning again and stretching lazily.

“I am not!” Saya said indignantly, folding her arms and scowling at him playfully.

“Of course you are,” He said with a grin, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her to him. “You always cheat when you think you can get away with it.”

“Counting cards is not illegal, it’s strategy, and if it’s not illegal, then it’s not cheaing.” She said, struggling to get out of his grip.

“Maybe, but gambling is against school rules, sooo, as compensation, I want half your profit.” Logan said, smirking at her and tightening his grip. Saya sighed with resignation and relaxed against him, rolling her eyes.

“Fine.” She grumbled.

“Good girl.” Logan said, laughing and ruffling her hair affectionately.

“I’m not a dog!” Saya growled resentfully.

“No of course not, you’re a wolf.” He replied, winking at her.

The other students in the compartment watched this exchange with interest and mild amusement. They had been excited when they were placed in Logan’s group and more excited still when they learned that Saya had been too, and so far neither of them had been a disappointment.

“So Sir,” One of the girls, a pretty red-head named Jenna, asked. “How much longer until we reach Buenos Aires?”

“I dunno, I while I guess.” Logan said, shrugging and falling back on the matrices and dragging Saya down with him.

The school had decided that in order to cut cost and give the students a more ‘authentic’ experiance that instead of simply flying from North Carolina to Argentina that they would take a more ‘adventurous’ route. Starting with a 4 and a half our drive from Asheville to the Raleigh and ending with a 24 hour train ride from San Jose, Costa Rica to Buenos Aires, Argentina. All and all it would take about 36 hours to get to Argentina from North Carolina but, according to the school, this slightly longer route would save enough money for them to afford nicer accommodations. Complete idiocy in Logan’s opinion, after all Scarlett Academy was a private school!

The girl sighed dramatically and Logan rolled his eyes.

“Look Babe, we’ll be there soon enough.” He said, taking a cigarette out of his pocket and searching for his lighter.

“Hey you can’t do that in here!” Another girl with short blond hair said, folding her arms and stamping her foot like a 2 year old.

“I can do whatever I blood well like.” He said, laughing triumphantly as he found the lighter and getting to his feet.

“Come on Doll, walk with me.” He said, holding open the compartment door and motioning for Saya to follow. Saya rolled her eyes but got up, following him out the door and down the hall to stand beside him on the small exterior patio that linked the two cars.

“So,” Logan said, taking a drag and watching the countryside fly by. “Are you nervous at all?”

“A little,” Saya said, leaning back against the train’s wall and sighing heavily. “You know if it were up to me I wouldn’t have gone.”

“Ya, me either.” Logan said.

...

“Ma’am do I really have to go?” He asked, looking at Ms. Langston imploringly.

“Yes.” She said, with definite finality in her voice.

“But Ma’am won’t it just make it worse to have Saya and I there? After all we were the ones who caused all of this trouble in the first place.” Logan reasoned, hoping to change her mind.

“That may be, but I’m sure after spending 2 weeks in your company your little antics will lose their effect and life will return to normal here at Scarlett Academy.” She said, folding her arms stubbornly.

“But Ma’am!” Logan cried with exasperation.

“You and Miss Dwight are going Mr. Howlett, and I don’t want to hear another word about it!” She said.

...

Logan sighed and ran a hand through his hair, tossing his cigarette and leaning against the car door next to Saya.

“It’s not going to be safe for us there.” He said quietly.

“No,” Saya agreed. “But maybe we’ll get lucky.”

“Ya, cause we’re always so lucky.” He retorted, laughing and ruffling her hair.

“We are when we count cards.” She said smiling back at him and slapping his hand away playfully.

“Oh? Are you suggesting that we cheat to raise the odds in our favor?” He asked, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close.

“Why yes, yes I am.” She grinned, standing on her toes and kissing him affectionately.

Logan smiled and returned the kiss before leading her back to the compartment.

This was going to be an interesting trip.
