Chapter 10: Deterioration

“Saya, Babe, I need you to wake up soon okay?” Logan said, watching Saya’s face carefully.

It had been a week since the incident and Logan looked horrible. He was tired and disheveled with dark circles under his eyes from lack of sleep and messy hair where he had run his hands through it so often. He hadn’t shaved all week and was progressively getting scruffier which only served to emphasize his thinning features and the fact that he was slowly starving himself.

It had gotten so bad that even the nurses had taken notice and where now making every effort to revitalize him. They would leave food out under the pretense of it being for Saya despite the fact that she was still unconscious and they had even cleared out the other bed in the room in the hopes that he might take advantage of it. But night after night he fell asleep in that stiff chair next to her bed, and day after day the food remained untouched.

It was clear, painfully clear, to anyone who went by the room and saw him there that he was in love with the girl. More obvious than his love though was the fact that something was tormenting him. It was plainly visible, every time he looked at her that flash of sorrow, concern, and most prominently, self loathing.

He had a whole week to think about it and the more he thought, the more he hated himself. He had realized, with a sickening revolution, that he was, in some small way, responsible for all of this.

The truth was that his father had been the cause of all of Saya’s miseries. He had used her as a way to broadcast a message around the world:

Mess with me and I’ll find you, and when I do, I’ll make you suffer.

He understood just what his father had done now, and with every passing day it was becoming a little bit clearer.

He had ordered the hit on her family and then allowed her to escape. Just to find her again, to torment her! He had given her those jagged scars across her back, if not by his hand then by his henchmen's and he let her escape again. He had paid off WITSEC to take her in, all the while keeping tabs on her, and then he had gone in to finish the job ... all by his lonesome.

She was stronger than his father though, and better prepared, neither of which he was expecting. She had survived and he had fallen, and now his father was facing prosecution... but still ... where did that leave Saya and himself? How could they possibly continue on as if none of this had happened?

And then there was the school. Ever since they had realized that Logan had been over at her house their focus had been singular. It didn’t seem to matter to them that their student had nearly been killed, or for that matter that his actions had probably saved her from bleeding to death. All that mattered was the fact that he was there, at a students house, when he was not supposed to be.

As a result he was being hounded 24/7. His colleagues were constantly checking up on him, the principle was speaking to all of his classes, they were even questioning his ex-girlfriend. He could feel the net drawing tighter.

Logan ran his hand through his hair again and sighed heavily. It was all too much. As if Lindsey knowing wasn’t bad enough, now the school suspected something too. It was as if the world were going to hell in a hand-basket right before his eyes.

“Saya, Baby, I’m begging you please! You’ve got to wake up soon! I don’t know how much more of this I can take.” He said, resting his forehead on the bed’s edge and closing his eyes.

“I know you’re in bad shape Darling, and I know you need to recover but it’s complete insanity out here! I really need to talk to you. Won’t you wake up? Just for a minute?” He asked, increasingly desperate.

“I suppose,” Said a groggy and strained voice. “That a minute might be manageable.”

“Saya!” Logan said, jumping to his feet and pulling her into a bone-crushing hug. Saya whimpered quietly but returned the hug as best she could, her body still very sore from all her injuries and protesting loudly.

“You’re awake!” He said, grinning goofily at her. She smiled gently at him and yawned.

“So it would seem.” She said.

“Oh Hun,” He said, his tired eyes morose as he looked at her. “They know, they all know.”

“What do they know?” Saya asked gently, already knowing the answer but wanting to hear it for herself.

“About us, about what we’ve been doing. They know everything Babe and I don’t know what to do about it.” He said buring his face in his hands.

He was tired and drained physically, mentally, and emotionally. He had no strength to deal with everything that was going on right now and even if he did he still wasn’t sure he’d be able to handle it. He looked up at her, shaking his head sadly, his shoulders drooping with resignation.

He had messed up, they had both messed up. They had ignored all the reasons they shouldn’t have been together both present and past and now they had to face the consequences.

Student and teacher. Thief and thug. Lovers and rivals. Young and Old.

How much more twisted could their identities become?

She reached out towards him and he understood and complied. Clambering into the bed next to her and pulling her close. They wouldn’t have many more moments like this, the walls were all closing in on them.

“Saya, Baby, I’m sorry.” He said, running his hand through her hair and staring out the hospital room window. He was sorry for it all, for everything, for his father, for himself, for the pain that she had endured at his father’s hands, and for the agony they were about to endure at his. This was bad, very bad, and they both knew it.

Saya smiled, resting her head on his chest and closing her eyes. She knew what was coming, but somehow, it didn’t bother her as much as it should have.

“I love you Logan.” She said softly, looking up at him. Logan sighed and looked up at the ceiling before looking back down at her and smiling wistfully.

“I love you too Darlin’.” He said, frowning slightly.

What an unfortunate time and place to find love.

[A/N: So, what did you lot think? I know, it’s a bit cliche, but you try to write a scene where your main characters say ‘I love you’ and have it not be a bit sappy. Oh but don't let the ending dishearten you too much my Darlings :) People like Saya and Logan don't give up easily. Either way I hope this chapter helped to enlighten you all a little bit, all the puzzle pieces should be in place now. So: Read, Rate, and Review my duckies!]
