Chapter 5: Honeymoon Fabrications

“So Logan,” Saya said, closing her eyes and lying back on her beach towel with her hands behind her head. “Tell me. Where did you get that snazzy car of yours? I know you didn't get it on a teacher salary, no matter how nice the school is.”

“Oh? And how do you know that?” He asked, rolling over to look at her.

“Well, my mother was a teacher, and her shopping trips were usually funded by my father.” Saya said.

“What? You've never heard that saying 'Whats her's is hers, and whats mine is hers?'” He asked. Saya snickered and shook her head.

“Trust me, if she were making enough to afford a Ferrari, she wouldn't have married my father.”

“Ah,” Logan said, then scowled. “But I thought you said your mom died when you were young.”

“Oh, she did.” Saya said. “My dad ended up marring one of my grade school teachers after they met at a parent-teacher conference. I learned to call her mother as a courtesy to my father, but make no mistakes the woman was not my mother. I do; however, sometimes refer to her as 'mother' out of habit. Now, are you going to answer the question or not?” Logan blushed lightly and turned away, mumbling.

“I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you. Could you repeat that?” Saya said, grinning at his turned back. Of course she had heard it perfectly, but she couldn't resist the urge to tease him a little.

“I said it was a birthday present from my girlfriend.” He said, turning back to Saya and glaring harshly. Saya bit back a laugh and raised her eyebrow.

“Oh, a sugar-mama eh?” She teased. Logan growled roughly and sat up, looming over Saya menacingly.

“No! So she makes more money than I do, who cares? I'd rather work for free doing what I love then sell my soul for corporate pay!” He snarled.

“Woah! Easy,” Saya said, reaching up and placing her hand on his shoulder. “I was just teasing. I'd take a teacher over a banker anyday.” Logan snorted and fell back on his towel, glaring up at the sky.

“Well, you're one of about 10 women who think that way.” He muttered darkly.

“You'd be surprised, Sir. I'd think most women would agree an honorable man is more appealing than a rich one.” Logan laughed and glanced at Saya, shaking his head.

“Saya, no offense, but women like you aren't in the majority, your step-mother should attest to that. Women want hot guys with nice paychecks, big houses, and expensive clothing.”

“What about your girlfriend?” Saya asked.

“She wanted me to be a lawyer. She gives me expensive gifts to show me what I could have if I didn't teach, besides, she's getting bored with me. I bet you $50 she'll break up with me by the end of the month, another 50 that she's been cheating, probably with a doctor or lawyer, and an extra 100 that she will give me grief on her way out the door saying that we could have been something if I had just put in the effort. Which is her way of saying 'if you had done what I told you to.'” He said with a 'matter-of-fact' tone. Saya sat up, looking down at him with a sad expression.

“Really?” She asked. Logan looked over at her, surprised to see that she seemed genuinely upset.

“Ya. It's how the world works kid. You could give most people all the money in the world and it would still never be enough.” Saya whimpered sympathetically and moved to comfort him, wrapping her arms around his neck and resting her head on his chest. Logan lay there for a moment, shocked, before moving one of his arms to encircle her waist.

“I'm sorry.” She murmured solemnly, staring at the ocean as the waves broke on the shore.

“For what?” He asked, also watching the ocean.

“For your girlfriend. She must be crazy to let you go, if I were her I certainly wouldn't.” Saya said looking at Logan, her eyes shimmering sadly in the dimming light. Logan laughed sadly and shook his head,

“There was a time when I would have done anything to keep her, even if it meant sacrificing my own happiness. But, I've since realized that no woman is worth having who values her happiness over her partners.” Saya nodded,

“Ya, love shouldn't come with conditions.”She said quietly. Logan was just about to respond when an elderly couple stopped a few feet away from them, smiling fondly.

“Oh look Honey,” The old woman said, leaning against her husband and sighing reminiscently. “Newlyweds.” Saya tilted her head to the side and looked up, searching for the couple, only to find them looking at her and Logan. She turned bright red and looked down to find Logan grinning back at her. He sat up, turning towards the couple and wrapping his arm around Saya.

“Hello.” He said cheerfully.

“Oh now look what you did,” The old man said giving his wife a stern look. “You disrupted them.” Logan smiled brightly at them and shook his head.

“Oh nonsense,” He said. “We were just waiting for the sunset.”

“Oh the sunset is beautiful this time of year.” The old woman gushed, sitting down on the sand.

“Are you from around here?” The man asked. Logan shook his head, smiling over at Saya fondly.

“No, we are on our honeymoon, we are actually from North Carolina.” He said pulling Saya closer to him and whispering discretely in her ear.

“Humor them Doll, they're old, it will make them happy.” Saya leaned against Logan and looked at him adoringly before smiling at the old woman.

“We got met in Tuscany,” She said in a dreamy voice. “Logan was teaching english at a local high school and I was on a 'study-abroad' program at a nearby college. You know it's so rare to hear someone speaking english in a foreign country, the second I heard him talking I was instantly drawn to him. I wasn't expecting to find someone so handsome though, and well, after that everything just kind of fell into place. We got married in a small chapel in Venice during the festival but came home for our honeymoon so we could meet each other's family.” The old woman sighed and placed her hand on her heart, her eyes shining.

“Oh Author isn't that just the most romantic thing you've ever heard?” She asked, looking at Logan and Saya with eyes that grew ever-fonder by the second.

Logan and Saya talked with the couple for half and hour before getting up going their separate ways, making sure that they were a good distance from them before breaking down with laughter.

“That was bloody brilliant.” Logan said, wiping his eyes and leaning against the wooden railway of the path that lead back to the road. Saya grinned at him and took a bow,

“What can I say? Stories are my specialty.” Logan chuckled again and shook his head, his eyes gleaming fondly at her.

“Well then Mrs. Howlett,” Logan said, grinning and offering her his arm. “Shall we get going then?”Saya grinned back and nodded.

“Oh yes, lets.”
