Beautiful Aftermath

"I just can't beat him at hand-to-hand combat!" you whined to Hanji as the two of you drank tea in the meeting hall. You were in the Scouting Regiment's headquarters, the castle-like construction at the end of a long forest. It's been nighttime for long but you couldn't sleep. Hanji was in the middle of telling you something but you were afraid she'd go on and on about titans if you didn't change the subject.

Hanji pushed her glasses over her head and leaned further towards the table. "He's never lost in hand-to-hand training before. He's pretty strong, you know."

This morning, the superiors decided to train the new recruits in the Scouting Legion in hand-to-hand combat to brush up on their survival skills. You remembered how the corporal had thrown you down at first strike. You attacked relentlessly and refused to give up but no matter how many times you attacked him, you couldn't manage to land a single blow.

"You know, Hanji-san, that's not really helping." You sighed, running your fingers around the mouth of the empty mug you were holding.

Hanji laughed in a silly manner. "Sorry, sorry. What did you expect? He's humanity strongest soldier, and you just graduated from the trainees squad. I'd be surprised if the newbie got the best of him on her first try."

"Hanji-san, that's not the problem. It's because I li--" You cut yourself short, realizing what you were about to say. You blushed at the sudden slip of the tongue. You weren't supposed to say that here. At least not to Hanji, of all people. She'd never shut up about it if she found out that you liked your superior.

"Hm? What's wrong, (f/n)?" Hanji's eyes widened. "Ooh! I get it!"

The brunette giggled and took the words right out of your mouth. "You like Levi, don't you?!"

"Hanji-san, you're too loud!" You scream-whispered, trying to get the squad leader to calm down.

Sure, you hated how calm his expression was and how he didn't even break a sweat after treating you like a punching bag. You hated how he furrowed his brows in concentration and how there's always only one type of expression on his face. You hated how strong he was despite him being shorter than an average teenage girl. And yet, you just couldn't find the heart to hate him.

Instead of thinking badly of him, you grew to like him despite his personality. You grew to love the pipsqueak even though he was hard to get along with.

"So does that mean that you do like him?" Hanji asked, the volume of her voice not changing.

"Y-Yes, but please don't tell anyone about this..." You blushed. "I just got into the legion and he doesn't know me that well. If he found out, I don't know what I'll do."

"All right. I won't tell anyone." Hanji smiled at you. "Don't worry."

"Thank you, Hanji-san." You yawned. "I think I can sleep now. Thanks for keeping me company."

Hanji nodded and watched you get up from your seat, but just as you were about to leave through the door, Hanji called your attention back.

"Oh, and hey, (f/n)! I think I may have just the thing for your problem. Do you really want to beat Levi at hand-to-hand combat?"

You thought about it for a moment. Of course you wanted to beat him but you didn't want the others to think that you were a show-off. You weren't that strong but you at least wanted to feel what it was like to be on top. At least for once.
