Eren Jäger.

While he wasn't the best soldier, his determination was better than anyone else's. He was hardheaded and impulsive. Everyone thought he was simply an idiot, but to you, he was the bright side in everything. All the rigid training and rebukes you had to endure was all so you could follow him into the Survey Corps.

He was the reason for everything: why you were alive and why you kept fighting. If he hadn't picked you up that day, you would have been sent back to your district.

It was a long time ago.

The skies were clear and the birds, more liberated than man, flew past the horizon.

You saw him in his usual spot, swallowed up by a silent resolve. His black hair looked brown under the sunlight, tousled by the cool wind.

Your first time seeing them, his teal eyes were etched into your mind, becoming a remedy to your nightmares.

His brows were furrowed in deep thought as he stared out into the field where you were running. He was there everyday, watching you run laps but not as punishment. You weren't sure if he was watching you, but you knew at some point that his eyes followed you out of curiosity.

The small cabin provided a good view of the running field. It was where Eren and his roommates stayed during your days as trainees.

For minutes, he'd stay in the porch of their cabin until he had something to do. Whenever you finished a lap, you'd glance at the cabin and check if he was there. Most of the time, you saw him leaning on the wooden railing but sometimes, you'd see an empty porch, washing your nervousness away.

Since then, it became a habit to look at their porch, regardless if he was there or not. Over time, you finally knew what to make of your roller coaster of emotions. You fell for the eyes that looked past you and into the horizon.

It was one of the few things that kept you going on, but you knew you meant no more to him than the girl who ran laps every afternoon outside their cabin.

"Oh, (F/n). It's just you."

"Good evening." You greeted in a high-pitched voice. It was your first time talking to him and even though you haven't met each other, he knew your name. Frankly, all the trainees knew the name of the cadet who was always last place in everything.

The mess hall was empty and dimly lit. It was late and you couldn't sleep, so you walked around until you found the lights in the mess hall open, and there you found Eren sitting in one of the chairs.

"...What are you doing here?" He hunched over the table as if he was about to leave.

"I was just walking around." You stared at the floorboards to hide the blush on your face. "What about you?"

After the trial, he looked fine and uninjured even after the captain's severe beating. You were worried the whole time, hoping so badly that the people would accept him. Thanks to the captain, he was successfully recruited into the Survey Corps.

He looked better than you expected, which was a relief, but you felt lonely knowing he was already in the corps while you were still miles away from getting enlisted.

"I'm just walking around too." His eyes roamed around with obvious melancholy, like he wanted to burn the image of the place where he trained in his mind.

Tomorrow, he won't be around anymore. He's in the corps now. You won't see him for a while. Maybe you won't see him at all. You'd have to get used to an empty porch, and just thinking about it tore your heart into shreds.
