"She wasn't sure when survival had stopped feeling like survival and started feeling like becoming someone else."

______________________________

Katherine found Harry sitting exactly where she had expected him to be.

On the stretch of sand overlooking the sea.

The tide rolled gently onto the shore, washing over the same patch of beach again and again, as though the ocean itself was trying to erase everything that had happened that day.

Dobby's freshly turned grave rested only a few feet away.

The small mound of earth looked heartbreakingly simple beneath the grey afternoon sky.

The headstone Harry had carved stood quietly at its head.

Here lies Dobby, a free elf.

Katherine stopped for a moment before walking any closer.

She read the words again.

Then again.

A lump formed painfully in her throat.

It was perfect.

There had never been anything Dobby had wanted more than freedom.

Not riches.

Not recognition.

Just freedom.

And friends.

He had found both.

Eventually.

She swallowed hard before finally making her way towards Harry.

He hadn't moved since burying him.

His forearms rested across his knees, his hands hanging loosely between them while he stared out across the endless stretch of grey water.

He looked...

Empty.

More empty than she'd ever seen him.

Even after Cedric.

Even after Dumbledore.

She lowered herself carefully onto the sand beside him.

For several moments neither of them spoke.

The only sound came from the waves crashing rhythmically against the shore.

Finally...

"Are you alright?"

The question came quietly.

Harry didn't look at her.

"I don't know."

His voice sounded tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

"I suppose..." He shrugged weakly. "...as alright as someone can be after burying one of their friends."

Katherine nodded slowly.

She understood that feeling well.

"You gave him a beautiful grave."

Harry's eyes flickered briefly towards the small headstone.

"He deserved better."

"He deserved..."

His voice caught.

"...more than this."

"So did Cedric."

"So did Moody."
