"Some doors close quietly. Others close forever."

Two months had passed since they had returned to Privet Drive.
Two long, suffocating months.
In the beginning, Katherine had convinced herself that it wouldn't feel very long. They would distract themselves by spending time working out who R.A.B. was, plan to recover the real Horcrux and finally begin the task Dumbledore had died trying to prepare them for.
Instead...
They had barely left the house.
Every morning began the same way.
The Daily Prophet landed on the front step.
Harry or Katherine would reluctantly retrieve it.
Then they would sit in silence, reading headlines that seemed darker than the day before.
Another Muggle-born missing.
Another wizarding family murdered.
Another unexplained disappearance.
More Ministry propaganda.
More lies.
More proof that Voldemort's influence was spreading faster than anyone had imagined.
The wizarding world wasn't simply changing anymore.
It was collapsing.
Muggle-born witches and wizards had become primary targets.
Entire Muggle families were disappearing overnight simply because they happened to be related to magical children.
People weren't just living in fear.
They were running.
Hiding.
Abandoning homes that had belonged to their families for generations.
Despite everything...
Harry and Katherine remained trapped.
Number Four Privet Drive was no longer home.
Not really.
It was simply somewhere to exist.
Four walls.
A roof.
A temporary hiding place while the rest of the world burned around them.
Katherine stood quietly at the living room window, absent-mindedly tracing circles through the layer of dust that coated the glass.
Outside, the Dursleys' company car sat parked neatly against the curb.
Except today it looked very different.
Boxes filled the back seats.
Suitcases had been tied onto the roof.
Plastic bags bulged from every available space inside the vehicle.
Petunia hurried back and forth carrying armful after armful of belongings.
Vernon barked impatient instructions whilst trying to force yet another suitcase into the already overflowing boot.
Even Dudley...
Usually clumsy and complaining...
Worked silently.
Nobody argued.
Nobody shouted.
Nobody seemed interested in keeping up appearances anymore.
