"Every morning began with hope. Every evening ended with disappointment. Eventually, I stopped knowing which one hurt more."

That evening, Katherine had spent twenty minutes searching the grounds for Hermione. That was before she realised her idiocy for not checking the library first.

"Mione...I need your help."

Hermione immediately looked suspicious.

"No."

Katherine groaned dramatically.

"You don't even know what I'm asking."

"That has never stopped you before."

Despite herself, Hermione smiled.

And somehow, twenty minutes later, Hermione found herself sitting beside Katherine in front of the Gryffindor common room fire.

The warmth of the flames danced across the room.

Students chatted quietly around them.

The atmosphere felt calm.

Comfortable.

Exactly the sort of afternoon Katherine needed.

Especially after finally making things right with Draco.

"So," Hermione said, placing her book aside. "What exactly am I helping you with?"

Katherine brightened immediately.

"I want to send Fred something."

Hermione's expression softened.

"A letter?"

"Sort of."

Katherine grinned.

"I want him to hear my voice. Like a howler but not...angry."

Hermione's eyes twinkled at the challenge Katherine had put forward. She spent nearly fifteen minutes rummaging for a charm she had read years ago. When she finally did, she acted like she had won something.

As Hermione explained the charm, Katherine found herself smiling more and more.

Just thinking about Fred made her happier.

Made everything feel lighter.

The enchanted quill hovered above the parchment.

Waiting.

Ready.

Katherine swallowed nervously.

Then began.

"Freddie."

Immediately the quill started moving.

A smile spread across her face.

Merlin.

She missed him.

"So... I already miss you."

The words came easier than she'd expected.

"Which is ridiculous because I literally saw you a week ago."

Hermione rolled her eyes fondly.

Katherine ignored her.

"The castle feels strange without you." Her voice softened. "I keep turning corners expecting you to be there."

The quill continued writing.

"And every time something funny happens, I think about telling you before remembering I can't." A small laugh escaped her. "I wish you were here."

The smile faded slightly.
