"Every promise they made in that cave would cost them more than they could ever have imagined."

"You're coming with us? It's dangerous, Kat..."
Harry's voice was quieter than usual.
Not doubtful.
Protective.
Katherine looked up from where she'd been pacing the circular platform at the top of the Astronomy Tower. The wind tugged at her hair, carrying the scent of rain across the castle grounds below.
She stopped and met his eyes.
"Of course I'm coming." Her answer came without hesitation. "I'm not leaving my brother to walk into something Dumbledore himself has called dangerous."
Harry opened his mouth to argue.
"Don't." She raised a finger. "You'd do exactly the same if it were me."
Harry's shoulders sank.
"...Yeah. I know."
Silence settled between them until Dumbledore approached.
For once, the Headmaster looked every bit his age.
His silver beard stirred gently in the wind, his blue eyes carrying an exhaustion Katherine had never noticed before.
Usually, there was a quiet confidence about him.
Tonight...
Tonight there was only determination.
"I wish," Dumbledore said softly, "that neither of you needed to be involved."
His gaze moved between them.
"You have already endured more than most witches and wizards experience in an entire lifetime."
Katherine felt an uncomfortable twist in her chest.
"It should not be your burden."
Harry frowned.
"But it is?"
Dumbledore smiled sadly.
"Unfortunately."
He walked towards the edge of the tower, looking out across the darkening sky.
"I believe that what we seek tonight may prove vital."
His voice grew quieter.
"And I believe the two of you may be among the very few capable of seeing this through."
Katherine exchanged a glance with Harry.
That wasn't reassuring.
Not even slightly.
"The place to which we journey," Dumbledore continued, "is exceedingly dangerous."
His expression hardened.
"There is only one condition upon which I permit you to accompany me."
They waited.
"You will obey every instruction I give."
His eyes settled firmly on Katherine.
"Immediately. Without hesitation. Without question."
The seriousness in his voice sent a chill through her.
No jokes.
No clever remarks.
No room for debate.
Katherine swallowed.
