The following evening arrived far quicker than Katherine expected.
By seven o'clock, she had already changed into comfortable clothes, hidden the last few supplies she needed, and checked her carefully crafted plans at least six separate times.
Not that she wasn't nervous.
She absolutely was.
But she refused to call it that.
Excited sounded much better.
The girls' night had started as a silly idea.
A distraction.
A way to escape everything for one evening.
Now it felt strangely important.
A chance for all of them to breathe.
To be themselves.
To find out the truth.
To forget, even temporarily, that the wizarding world seemed determined to fall apart around them.
Unfortunately, Hermione Granger was making that difficult.
"Come on, Mione, honestly," Katherine groaned dramatically. "We've been waiting for twenty minutes."
"I can't find my jumper."
"You packed three."
"Not that one."
"Then wear one of the other three."
"It's not the same."
Katherine groaned dramatically.
Beside her, Ginny burst out laughing.
The two of them were waiting near the fireplace in the Gryffindor common room while Hermione continued tearing apart the girls' dormitory upstairs.
Every few seconds another crash echoed from above.
Followed by Hermione muttering to herself.
Then another crash.
"At this point, I'm ready to leave without her."
Ginny nodded.
"I'm giving her five more minutes."
Another thud sounded overhead.
"Found it!"
Katherine dropped her head backwards against the sofa.
"Merlin be praised."
Unfortunately, they weren't alone.
The familiar sound of footsteps descending the staircase made Katherine immediately suspicious.
Ron.
Followed closely by Harry.
Of course.
The two boys looked entirely too interested in what was happening.
Which meant trouble.
"Where are you lot even going?"
Ron folded his arms.
Trying and failing to look casual.
Katherine pointed at him immediately.
"That's classified information."
