I slept for a while, I didn't have a dream, but when I woke up, it was surely a nightmare.
Klaus had his arms around me, he was wide awake, so was Beatrice.
I opened my eyes, everybody else was being held at gunpoint, we had a harpoon gun way too close to us.
I wanted to sleep again, how did they find us?
"The sugar cubes please, Miss Snicket." The Lady said.
I stared at her, "I don't have them, I promise." I said, too quickly.
"You're lying, give them to me or I'll pull the trigger."
"Please, don't do that." Klaus moved forward slightly.
I couldn't move, I realised we were being held captive by Earnest.
"Esme, search the bag." The Lady demanded.
Esme let go of Quigley and patted Carmelita on the head, who was holding Violet, and grabbed my bag.
Luckily, I had my spyglass in my pocket, which was a win. That was where I put the sugar cubes.
"There's nothing." Esme sighed.
"Impossible." The Man said.
"We threw them away." Violet made up, "there was no need for them."
"You did what!" The Lady yelled.
I went along with the story, "yeah they're long gone."
The Lady pulled the trigger, Klaus pulled me out of the way, I pulled Klaus with me.
"How romantic." Esme laughed.
I looked at Klaus, "you okay?"
"I escaped unscathed." He sighed.
I smiled slightly, looked forward and saw the gun faced right at me.
"The sugar cubes." The Lady demanded.
I opened my bag and quickly handed her the bag. She lowered the gun.
"Klaus?" I whispered.
"Yeah?"
"Trust me, you can't stop me, I'm staying if this all goes wrong."
"No, you can't-"
"You can't change that. We'll meet up again at some point." I sighed.
The Lady took a bite of one of the sugar cubes, "these are peppermint."
"As in now." I mumbled, "go Klaus."
He kissed me and got up, I kicked Earnest in the shin, he grabbed Violet and Quigley. They started going down the scaffolding.
I avoided a shot from the harpoon gun again, trying to catch up with them, knowing I wouldn't.
Sadly, I didn't avoid the other, it landed in my shoulder, I screamed and fell too close over the edge.
"Good shot, Esme." The Man smiled.
"I'm good at shooting down many things, such as orphans." She laughed.
I won't die. I won't die.
"Klaus!" I yelled, crying.
He looked up at me and began climbing up again until Violet pulled him back.
I understood what she was doing, I was throwing him to the sharks if he climbed back up.
Esme pulled the harpoon out of my shoulder, I screamed as loud as I could.
She threw it to the side, "just give us them, it's as simple as that. You could go back to your sweetheart if you would just give them up."
I reached for my spyglass an emptied them out of the lense. Sorry Frank.
She grabbed them all straight away, "thank you."
"This Snicket might be valuable if we want to catch the others." The Man said.
"No please, don't. Don't keep me." I mumbled.
"Unless you want to be thrown off." Esme said.
"I'd rather that than anything."
