"Who is it?" I heard Father through the old, rustic apartment door.
This is different to what I'm used to, despite the other events.
"This sure needs a clean." Violet whispered.
I nodded.
"Fiona, Mr Snicket." She replied and Father immediately opened the door, "I've had to bring them."
"Oh, right."
I did not dare look at my Father as I walked into his chaotic apartment room.
I let go of Klaus and started looking over the pin boards covered in articles from old Baudelaire case papers to missing children such as myself.
Father declared I was missing?
I finally looked at Father with disgust.
"Father, what is this?" I ripped off the paper from the wall.
He went quiet and paused Fiona's explanation.
Klaus stared at the piece of paper, Violet beside him and Quigley.
"What is it, Father?" I demanded an answer.
"I had to."
"For what!"
"I'm on the lam, Charlotte."
"But, you didn't need to say I was...missing...and possibly dead..."
"I was doing it to protect-"
"Protect yourself." I sighed.
He sighed, "Charlotte, don't be like this."
"I have a right to be."
"But, not this way."
"I have a right, Father!"
"Charlotte!" He yelled and I went quiet, tearing up.
He had never acted this way, only after Mother's death. He had never shouted at me since that frightful day.
"Anyway, Fiona.." Father turned to Fiona and carried on.
I stood there, confused. Upset and angry, conscious and unconscious at the same time.
Klaus had to shake me back to reality, I hugged back, crying silently.
Father wasn't taking any notice, and Klaus took note of that. He said he didn't like that.
"He's only been this way...once....when Mother died..." I mumbled to him.
Father picked that up, "he doesn't need to know everything, Charlotte!"
"And neither do you, eavesdropper." I replied, annoyed.
Klaus kissed my forehead, trying to get him to calm down, Father did not like that.
"Hands off my daughter, Baudelaire!" He yelled.
I stared at Father and pulled Klaus closer, he couldn't do anything to tear us apart.
"Charlotte, I mean it."
"I'll say it, just to make him go quiet." Klaus whispered.
I knew what he was hinting at, I nodded.
"We're together, Lemony." Klaus spoke up.
I stared at my Father's expression, a mix of hatred and defeat, but mostly anger.
I smiled slightly and nodded.
"You dare agree with anything like that before I knew?" He mumbled.
"Yes, Father."
He went quiet again, I knew what he was thinking about: his last relationship.
They did the same as us, and look at where they ended up. In pieces, is what he was thinking. I could see it.
"Should we leave?" Violet mumbled to Klaus.
Klaus's hand tightened on mine, "I want to know what the problem is before we go. We're leaving Fiona for sure." He mumbled back.
"She can take my place." I looked over at Fiona.
"Course I can." She smiled.
"I don't want you to end up like your Mother, Charlotte. And you know what I mean by that." Father sighed.
"This isn't about what you want!" I shouted, "I'm not in any danger apart from the obvious!"
Quigley picked up Sunny and walked out, he was bored. So was I.
I looked up at Klaus and nodded.
"It's her choice, Mr Snicket." Klaus mumbled.
"I've already made it." I smiled.
Violet grabbed my arm and pulled me along with her, we were finally leaving.
"Charlotte.."
"No, Father. Fiona, expect our stuff out when you get back."
"Where are you going to, Snicket?"
"None of your business."
She sighed and looked away, beginning to talk to Lemony about the conversation that she had with Frank a while ago.We were all walking down a narrow, forest road, luggage in hand. We were going back to 667 Dark Avenue, seen as that was the only place we had.
All that was new, was the fact that Quigley was holding Violet's hand.
Sunny was on Klaus's back, which was pretty humourous as every now again she'd pull at Klaus's hair. Not that I'm thinking that fact that him in pain is funny, just her expression.
Klaus was holding my hand, his bag in his other, somehow Sunny was keeping balance.
"You should let go of my hand, for Sunny's sake."
"No, Charlotte. She's got better balance than a cat...or maybe a tightrope walker." He smiled.
I nodded, "okay, but if she falls-"
"Don't worry." She giggled.
Klaus winced as she pulled his hair again, making his glasses fall slightly.
I pushed them back on for him, "there."
He looked at me for a moment, "thank you."
"You're welcome, anytime." I laughed.I heard an engine coming up from behind us, but this road was too thin for a car. I looked behind me and saw Count Olaf's car speeding toward us.
"Klaus. Problem." I muttered.
"What?"
"Car."
"What?"
"Esme!"
He pulled Esme off of his back and grabbed my bag from my arms, put it on his back instead and grabbed Violet. I picked up Sunny and started running.
The car was getting faster every second, I was just waiting for the beacon of hope at the end of the road, the back of the town to Dark Avenue.
But, then I heard the car stop and a handful of screams.
Violet, Quigley and Klaus were being pulled into the back of Count Olaf's stinky car.
"You're going to the elevator!" I heard Esme laugh.
I stared in shock, knowing that I had run too far in front.
All I saw was them mouthing, "run." to me.
So I ran.
I ran all the way into the town, searching endlessly for a Dark Avenue.
Luckily, thanks to Esme's stupidity, I knew where they were going. To the exact place I was. The ersatz elevator.
