Hello, students- you're not wearing uniform...who are you?" He asked, confused.
"I believe we've come to this school before-" Violet began.
"Earnest sent us." Klaus interrupted.
"Oh, I know you, Baudelaires!" He finally recognised them, "and...er.."
"Snicket. Charlotte Snicket." I reminded.
"Oh yes, that...smart....I've forgotten..your father is Lemony, right?"
"Yeah.." I answered.
"Uniforms are down in the boys changing room corridor. Snicket, shack, Baudelaires, I'll get you a dorm key." He instructed, "violin recital after five o'clock."I walked down the seemingly long corridor with the others, "told you, I had no choice. Everybody knows because of the stupid Daily Punctillio."
"We'll wake you up and hang out until dark, if that's fine. I don't want you getting lonely." Klaus promised.
"Thanks, Klaus." I smiled, coughing at the scent of stinky gym socks.I grabbed my uniform and walked to where the shack was, getting slightly confused due to a long time of not experiencing boarding school.
I left the others with Beatrice to get a dorm, I needed a little time before everybody else came out of their classes. A swarm of wasps getting ready to sting.
Cake sniffing orphan in the orphan shack, I remembered.I walked into the crab-infested, cold and rusty shack, the light that Violet had altered still hanging from the ceiling and their bed exactly the same way they left it, books everywhere.
I turned on the slight, making it spin, the crabs went into hiding.
I dumped my bag on the floor and slipped on my uniform, sitting on the hard mattress, feeling tired, the light was almost dimming. I realised it took us years just to get inside the building due to Earnest dropping us that far away.
I lay down on the pillows, yawning, but then I heard the bell ringing.
Lessons had finished. Dinner.I walked back up the stairs, my eyes dropping due to tiredness and grabbed a tray, some classmates recognising me, some laughing.
A spoonful of mush was put on my plate, I looked up to see who the lunch person was, not someone I knew. I sat down on a table, on my own. Waiting.
I saw Klaus and Violet walk in, Sunny and Violet on each of their shoulders, I smiled slightly.
This time I wasn't getting water spilt all over me.
Before the others could get to my table, some people realised the news and got most go the school to say, "cake sniffing orphan in the orphan shack!"
So much that the Baudelaires had to yell, "Stop it!"
Everybody went silent and carried on as they were.Klaus sat opposite, Violet beside him, just picking at their food.
"What do we do....?" I asked.
"Find a way out..and obviously a place to go." Violet decreed.
I then heard the familiar tapping of shoes, "better go now.."
I don't think the others could hear it, "why?"
"You don't hear the tapping?" I asked, pointing at the pink dress walking through the crowd of children going for seconds.
I was suddenly engulfed by water.
Carmelita.
Klaus stared at me, sighing.
Carmelita laughed, "Cake Sniffer back in hell?"
I didn't answer, but Klaus did, "leave her alone!"
"Carmelita, go pick on someone smarter than you, that's pretty hard because you already are..." Violet added.
I got up and ran out of there, old memories of this stupid hell flooding back.I sat in the shack, staring into space, waiting for something to happen.
I moved the mattresses out of the way, wanting to see what was there before.
All that was there was an old VFD tunnel, a way out of this mess if we needed it. I would tell the others, but they would instantly use it. Maybe Earnest would be waiting there to shoot us with a harpoon gun, that could be his plan; to get us out of Prufrock Prep like he knew we might, then shoot us.I forgot about the violin recital, Klaus had too so both of us were missing out.
"Klaus?"I asked.
"Yeah?"
"Can i tell you something? Just promise that you won't jump to conclusions or tell anyone." I enquired.
"Fine. What is it?"
I moved the mattresses again.
He adjusted his glasses, "how did me and the others not notice this..?"
"Don't tell them, I'm worried that it's a trap."
"I won't, trust me. I'm not sure if it's a good idea either." He admitted, "hopefully nothing happens tomorrow, we missed recital."
"Oh yeah...I forgot..." I sighed, "they can't really do anything..just a two hour long lesson of reading somewhat compulsory philosophy books."
"Don't say that." He laughed, playfully punching my shoulder.
"I've done it before, Klaus."
"For what?"
"I got a question wrong in my 'maths' test."
"Oh wow."
"I've had worse though, but that doesn't matter." I sighed.
He opened the tunnel up slightly and looked down, "at least it opens." He whispered, worried someone was down there.
"We always have an emergency exit." I smiled.
Suddenly, Carmelita walked over to the 'door' of the shack, "Cake Sniffer!" She yelled.
"Me?" Klaus pointed at himself.
"No, her!" She pointed at me, "Vice Principal Nero wants ya!"I got up and followed Carmelita, reluctantly.
Vice Principal Nero sounded somewhat upset, like he wanted me to be there because apparently it was 'important'. So he got Carmelita to take me anywhere in the school, no matter what it was, and keep me there until after midnight.
She did not disappoint him.
She made me follow her outside and toward the other side of the grounds, where all the lockers were. There was a gigantic dark basement next to it.
Nothing was in there, at least I didn't think there was. She threw me in there and locked the door.
I screamed and banged on the door. I was afraid of the dark.
I cried loudly, trying to get someone's attention.
