✑ᴊᴏʜɴ ᴍᴜɪʀCHAPTER SIX - THE CHASER
BEFORE I KNEW IT, the first few weeks of the months were over. My dad wrote to me once ensuring that Theo and I were doing well. I had answered him briefly since there wasn't much to say. The more weeks I spent at Hogwarts the more I kept myself busy. With essays, reading had become a habit again and a way to escape. I had read a little during the holidays, but no further than that. With my academic duties, reading was obviously essential, but I regained the taste. I spent a lot of time with Tracey and Blaise. I had also been getting closer to Millicient in the past few weeks. She was really good company and I was starting to enjoy her blunt side. But Millicient's company did not come without Pansy's. Although I didn't particularly like Pansy, the past few weeks have taught me to tolerate her more. The more time I spent with Pansy and began to feel sorry for her. I knew what she was giving off was an act. Unlike Millicient who was genuinely confident, Pansy was not. She deserved better even if she transferred her lack of confidence on other helpless students, she was also vulnerable. And, the first person to take advantage of her sensitivity was Malfoy. Their relationship had only been official for a few days and I knew for a fact that Malfoy didn't truly love Parkinson. I was certain he would hurt her because it was Malfoy and he was careless.
I was also kind of avoiding Theodore. I didn't know why, but only glare at him was getting unbearable. So I spent the first month of school speaking only briefly to him. I knew it should have been the opposite. We should have been closer in this difficult time, but I couldn't. But I wasn't the only one averting someone. Montague did the same with me. Since the kiss, he hasn't spoken to me and I had no intention to make the first move. If he wanted to approach me, it was up to him. There was no exchange as such between us, but it is true that I could feel his gaze on me occasionally. However, his friends didn't seem to have a problem approaching me. Vaisey and Pucey teased me all the time whenever they spotted me in a hallway or in the common room. Their teasing often sounded like, "Did you miss Montague today?" or "Why aren't you with your new boyfriend, Nott?". It was childish, but rather funny to witness. Then, after two weeks since the party, Montague had finally gathered the courage to approach me.
I was walking towards the Black Lake as I really enjoyed this spot to read. It was peaceful and comforting. No one bothered me or interfered with my reading, that was mainly why I collected myself there. I also took advantage of the beautiful weather in September to get there before the sudden breeze threatens my spot. Besides, Tracey and Blaise were busy. So now was the best time to go. On the way, Graham stopped me by shouting my name in distance. I suddenly turned around and smiled at him.
"Well, it took you a while. What do I owe the pleasure, Montague? " He laughed slightly embarrassed at my comment, but managed a smile. He scratched the back of his neck showing that he was still uncomfortable with the circumstances.
