✑ᴛʜᴇʟᴏᴠᴇʙɪᴛsCHAPTER ONE - HISTORY OF MAGIC
LIGHT FLOODED the classroom. I could feel the warmth of the sun's rays brushing against my skin. Mr. Binns voice was just an echo in the room. I don't know why I was so distracted, because I used to like his history lessons. No one really had their minds listening to their last lessons with the summer holidays so close. The school year had been eventful and all the students looked forward to the family reunion. Sirius Black's escape as well as his appearance in Hogwart created fear among the students. Parents weren't delighted about the possibility of a serial murderer lurking on school grounds despite the dementors. Regardless of the extraordinary events, I was finally going to be able to say that I had finished my third year at Hogwart.
"I'm definitely not going to take this class for my NEWTs." Tracey mumbled beside me. I rolled my eyes.
"Me neither." Daphne nodded, yawning. I sighed and Theodore nudged me, chuckling lightly.
"Surely Rosie will take it." He teased me.
"Definitely." Tracey added, settling in her chair. I glanced at my brother. "You could too, Theo, you have the grades." I remarked whispering.
"He sure could, but he's not as much of a nerd as you are." Blaise taunted. I stuck my tongue out at him and he laughed softly, being careful not to be noticed by Mr. Binns.
Although I got along with my friends, I spent the majority of my time in my dormitory or reading. I liked reading. Books allowed me to learn so much about magic, but above all to escape from my reality. My relatives often blamed me for not sticking my nose out of my books enough. Honestly, it wasn't an issue to be the loner and the nerd of the group. Theodore was the same. He might have been less of a nerd, but we both had that tendency not to draw attention to ourselves.
But it was Emily the social butterfly. Everyone knew Emily Nott, she always wore one of those eye-catching smiles. Her charisma intoxicated everyone without exception. My sister even had friends outside our house which is quite rare for Slytherins. Only, no one considered her to be a normal Slytherin. Certainly, Emily had all the qualities to be in this house, but my sister saw beyond the expectations of our house. She was unprejudiced unlike the majority of the Slytherins who saw the other houses as an excuse for wizards. My dad didn't like that side of Emily. On several occasions, he criticised her for damaging our reputation and being a traitor. Though they weren't muggleborns, he was sceptical that his daughter wasn't restricted to a group of friends that consisted only Slytherins. My father was extremely harsh on his vision of blood purity, but, on the other hand, he knew that Emily was very stubborn. So, if Emily didn't bring it up, my dad was willing to forget it until their next fight.
"What are you going to do for the holidays?" Daphne whispered, staring at Theodore.
"Spain with Mother." Blaise whispered.
"Visit my family in the countryside. Nothing extravagant." Tracey added who then turned to me and Theo who hadn't said anything yet.
"Well, we're going to stay here for Em for sure, but I'm not thinking about doing anything other than reading my books." I whispered to my friends.
"You could always come with us to Paris! Astoria would also be overjoyed if you were there and under the circumstances it could do you good." She offered, having her gaze on my brother again.
"Thanks for the offer Daphne, but we really have to stay for Em," Theo apologised, looking down to his knees. Daphne nodded though a little irritated by my brother's instant refusal. I gently took his hand below the table and squeezed it gently. He turned to me, sending me a slight grin.
My third year was a rough one for my family. My sister was ill. She had been transferred to St-Mongo's Hospital in the middle of the year since her condition worsened. She was weak and we rarely heard from her. It was one of the reasons I wanted the year to end. I could finally be with her.
All at once, the sound of the door interrupted the whole lesson and Mr. Binns. Professor Snape appeared in the classroom with his usual cold expression. He nodded, greeting Mr. Binns and our history teacher did the same.
"How can I help you Professor Snape?" Binns asked politely. Snape's gaze returned to the class until it came to my brother and I. "Can I borrow Miss and Mr Nott from you for the remainder of the course?" Binns only nodded at Snape's stern tone. "Miss and Mr Nott, if you will." I nodded at Binns and picked up my things, giving my brother an uncertain glare. He gave me the same look, which confirmed that he didn't understand the nature of this intervention either. So, we left the classroom following Snape's rapid pace.
My brother automatically asked him where we were going. Snape shrugged quickly, not even turning his head towards him, "Dumbledore's office." From Snape's comment, I realised this must be serious. A wave of stress slowly took hold of my body. I was starting to fear the reasons why the Headmaster would need to see me with Theodore in his office, yet I couldn't find any that made sense. So I questioned my professor with a simple, "Why?"
"Miss and Mr Nott, stop your questions, you will know soon enough." After three years of Snape's being my head house, I didn't take my questions further knowing that I would earn no answers. Clearly, his response didn't calm the growing anxiety in me, but I resonated myself that it shouldn't be significant.
This thought was automatically faded when my brother and I arrived at the Headmaster's office. In the middle of the office, I spotted my father standing next to Dumbledore. The moment my eyes met my father's, I knew the situation was far more serious than anything I could have imagined. However, I knew exactly why Dumbledore had asked us at his office and a wave of sadness crossed my body, which seemed to slowly lose its strength. I felt the tears forming at the bottom of my eyelids.
My father pronounced the word that my brother and I dreaded. "Emily" And with his voice foreshadowing sadness, a tear escaped my eye.
