It had been a few hours since I left Dally's room, and since no nurse had come to get me yet, I figured that Dally was still asleep. I'd been in my room the whole time, and I was now extremely bored of the same surroundings. I was ready to see something new. Hospital rooms are very bland and boring, and I want to go see Johnny again. I can't stand that he's alone and in so much pain, so I want to go see him.
Pushing through the door, I roll down the ramp and a few of the hallways before entering Johnny's room.
He looked much worse than he did earlier, and by the looks of it, his vitals were continuously dropping. It worried me how low they were, and it seemed like he wasn't going to live much longer.
"Hey Johnny."
"Oh hey Carly," he says tiringly, moving his head to look at me,with his eyebrows furrowing as he notices that I'm in a wheelchair, but he decides not to say anything.
All is quiet until Johnny speaks up once more.
"Hey, Carly, can you write a letter for me? It's to Ponyboy. I wanna have it ready incase something happens and I don't make it."
Tears threatened to spill down my face but I don't let them fall because Johnny was looking right at me.
"Of course I can, Johnnycake. What do you want me to write down?"
I say, grabbing a pen and paper from the nurse who had just brought the request in.
Very slowly, he goes through the note, and I'm not ashamed to say that I cried. Johnny used almost all of his strength in telling me what to write down, and I could tell he was dozing off, so I begin to talk to him.
"Dally and I are together now, you know?"
He looks at me, before speaking up,
"good... Dally needs someone to keep him straight, and you need to have a little fun once in a while."
I laugh and he continues, quiet struggingly, but continues,
"he's broken, ya know that? He can be really sweet if he wants to, but he only lets a few people into his heart. Don't break it, Carly. Its fragile,"
and then he falls asleep.
I sit there thinking about what he said, when the door bursts open, and Dally and Pony both run through it, each of them looking equally beat up. Dally quickly kneels beside Johnny,
"hey, Johnny man. We won the rumble! We beat em good. They ran like the little cowards they are."
"Fightin never done anyone no good... it's a waste of time,"
Johnny says, his vitals dropping more and more, and I began to know that these are his last few minutes of life.
Pony stands at the door, tears silently pouring down his face.
"Ponyboy.." Johnny calls out, and Pony walks forward, kneeling down beside the bed when Johnny mumbles something and Pony puts his ear next to Johnny's mouth.
"Stay Gold Ponyboy, Stay Gold.."
And then he's gone.
"Johnny no, don't die on me now Johnny. Please, man. Don't go.."
Dally says, beginning to cry as he looks at his best friend's still chest before he gets up, looking at me with a look in his eyes that kills me from the inside out. His whole face showed nothing but pain, and I could've swore he mouthed 'I'm sorry' before he ran out, not even stopping to close the door softly.
I quickly go after him as fast as I can, wheeling myself outside into the pouring rain, ending up beside a flustered doctor.
"Have you seen a teenager run this way?"
"Yes, I have. He's a little crazy, but ma'am, you need to get back inside-"
I interupt him.
"Thanks!" I say before quickly going into the direction the doctor had pointed in, yelling Dally's name every few seconds.
I had been in the rain for a few minutes, before suddently, I'm tipped over and I fall in the street out of the wheelchair, landing on my shattered leg. I yelp out in pain before trying to get up but I can't, so I just sit there crying. Suddently, gunshots ring through the silence and I know immediantley what happened and start sobbing.
"No! No! Please.... Dally, please come back... Don't Leave Me,"
I say, sobbing through every word.
I sit there for a few minutes, repeating those same words over and over, when suddentley I am picked up off the ground and hugged from behind.
"Never doll, I'll never leave you. I'll be here, always."
