♦Chapter 76: Blocking the Mouseholes♦[]Third Person's POV []
Four days have passed since the death of the Duchess of Shevaria has been relayed to the noble society. But even then, Marquis Aubetré has been itching still over the issue because of his lingering suspicion.
The head butler concerned himself at his master's troubles from afar, and said.
"Milord, would you mind to have something refreshing?"
"What are you suggesting, all of a sudden?"
"......The master wasn't able to rest well, these days."
Being unable to deny the attendant's words, the Marquis remained silent.
His lips looked pale, while there were dark bags under his eyes. That was a concrete evidence of how exhausted he was despite preventing himself from letting his guard down.
As if I could feel at ease in a situation like this! He thought.
The events these past few days as soon as his illegitimate daughter died were but a bunch of strange cases which triggered the more of his doubts.
It all began when the robbery incident occurred, where the study room has been messed with before the servants could notice what happened. After that, he disposed of those that were assigned to keep watch of the room, believing that the mansion doesn't require incompetent people. (And so he did to a servant with a rank, Reiner, to make it look like he committed suicide on the surface.)
But then, when the observation concerning the lost items were finished, it was reported that strangely, nothing was stolen.
Furthermore, not long after Reiner's death, he got wind of the fact that a maid suddenly disappeared without any trace, as if she has been spirited away. Currently, the Marquis was tracking the handmaiden's whereabouts before she could spill the things that happened inside the mansion to anybody but, even now there was not a single lead to be found. From the start, the fact that the servant was able to escape this birdcage, itself, was more than surprising since the Marquis had many eyes with him. Therefore, he was bothered by this puzzling consecutive happenings.
"Bring me the usual.", he ordered the butler, sighing with the palm of his hand on his forehead.
The butler then, made a bow as an act of formality of excusing himself for a moment, and left to do his task.
And after a few minutes of waiting, the servant came back with a warmly-served cup of coffee.
Marquis Aubetré had the mindset of keeping himself calm from the odd incidents that stressed him out during the cold nights as he carefully took a sip of the medium that was prepared for him, by the butler that he suspected less.
And after that one gulp, he briefly sighed again.
"Milord."
"Mhm?"
"How is the taste?"
A question mark popped out of the Marquis' head as soon as the butler's question reached his ears.
He wondered what it was about for usually, he wouldn't ask questions as such. Hence, it felt a bit weird to his perspective.
"That's quite unusual of you to--"
...What?
Before Marquis Aubetré could even assess the present situation, for some reason, his sight gradually diminished, second by second.
