Haven't updated this for a while - too busy writing other stories, sorry about that. I'll try and update this more often :))
James's POV:
"You know I never would have thought I'd be here, with you, on a date, sitting in the booth of a restaurant, sharing a plate of nachos," Riley smirks, sitting beside me on the sofa. I find it cute how she's smiling an awful lot and giggling at my stupid actions. It's nice to be around her, alone and away from everyone else at dance.
"The universe can be quite crazy sometimes," I say, shuffling up to sit beside her. She smiles but sighs as well, one where I couldn't quite tell if it was a happy one or a sigh of sadness and upset. She wipes the corners of her mouth using a serviette before placing it back down on the finished plate in front of her. "You okay?" I question. She looks up at me with a certain glint in her eye as if she was asking for help. A glint that makes it look like she's about to cry in any minute. A glint that represents exactly what her emotion is and makes me see past her walls and understand how she's feeling. Guilt. Extreme, bitter guilt.
"I'm such a terrible person, James," she says quietly. I moderately shake my head and then hold her hand on the table.
"No, Riles, you're not," I tell her. She chews on her bottom lip, sending me a hint that she's either worried or nervous about something. After dating Emily for two years straight, I also spent that time getting to know her siblings. Even though Riley and I used to barely talk, we found out a lot about each other, before this whole affair between the two of us started.
"I can't help but think that I ruined your and Em's relationship. The only reason you two broke up is because you became distant after that night we slept together and-" I cut her off by attaching her lips to mine. Startled, she tries to acknowledge the fact that my lips are on hers, but once she does, she kisses back softly. "Why did you do that?" she asks after a couple of seconds, but still allows her lips to hover against mine. I smile and run my hand through her hair.
"Because you worry too much," I answer. She looks down, clearly not believing what I had just said. "None of this is your fault, Ri. In fact, I think it happened for a good reason." She smiles and then connects our lips once more, this time allowing the kiss to last longer.
...
For the next two weeks, Riley and I made sure to keep our relationship a secret from everyone. It's hard because the guys keep on teasing me and saying that I must have done something wrong to make Emily decide she isn't straight anymore. I've tried explaining to them about how it's not as simple as that but they just don't understand. You don't just wake up one morning and think about changing your sexuality, there's a lot more input into it than that. It's not something to mock or tease or make fun of. It's just not.
"Okay, so how about we go like this?" I say as I place my hands on Riley's hips. We had been selected to do the Internationals duet for the tie-breaker and it was a bit surprising actually. Eldon and Thalia auditioned as well as Noah and Cierra and Amanda and Giselle. Theirs were all extremely good but I guess mine and Riley's was purely just better.
I pick her up and do an overhead lift which went perfectly. It feels like anything I do with Riley is always spot on. I place her back down so that she was standing in front of me.
"Okay, yeah that's good," she says, clearly out of breath.
"You tired?" I chuckle.
"I barely got any sleep last night because you kept on texting me," she sighs. I could tell it was a happy one though.
"I'm sorry baby," I whisper, placing my hands on her waist. She smiles but then looks behind me and then quickly steps out of my grip.
"Hey guys," I hear Ella say. I turn around to face her and see she had a smug grin on her face. "How's it going keeping this thing between you guys a secret?" she says, particularly loudly.
