We fetch the other piece of fresh-kill and go home. I pad across the clearing and put the mice and rabbit on the fresh-kill pile. I pad across the clearing to Sandstripe, who is sharing tongues with his mate, Speckleflower.

"That's great, Speckleflower!" He congratulates her when I'm in hearing length.

"Hi, Sandstripe. Hi, Speckleflower." I greet them.

"Hi, Hollypaw. I was just giving mousebrain here some good news." the she-cat tells me, brushing Sandstripe with her tail.

"Oh, what's that?" I ask, ears perking up.

"I'm going to be having kits!" she tells me happily.

"Oh, that's so wonderful. I bet they'll be so beautiful!" I tell her. Sandstripe sits straighter, practically giving off waves of excitement.

"Take fresh kill to the elders, then you can have some, okay?" Sandstripe asks.

"Of course, Sandstripe." I answer, and bound back over to the fresh-kill pile. I choose a plump vole and carry it to the shady hollow underneath the oak tree.

"I remember when you were a trouble making, bouncing young apprentice and warrior." Rasps a voice.

"Me too. Those were the days." meows a bright voice, slightly hoarse with age. I push my way in.

"Hi, Hollypaw. I hope that's for us." A silver she-cat meows, staring at the vole.

"Yep. Are you doing all right in here, Dovefur?" I ask. She'd only recently moved into the elder's hollow.

"Yes, I am. Thanks." she answers.

"What news, young Hollypaw?" The oldest elder, Tallsplash, asks as he pads over to take his share.

"Speckleflower is going to be having kits." I meow.

"Oh-" Tallsplash begins to reply.

"I love when we get new kits! Didn't Tenderheart just have her second litter?" a curly orange tom interrupts.

"Yeah, she actually did, Wavepelt." I answer, giving Tallsplash a knowing look.

"Tell them both I said congratulations." Tallsplash says.

"I'm seeing them myself." Dovefur declares, swiping her tongue around her lips.

"I'm going too. This apprentice probably has enough to do." Wavepelt tells her.

"Not really. I'm going to eat, then I'll go with you, okay?" I tell him.

"Sounds good." replies Wavepelt. I push my way out into the clearing and head back to the fresh-kill pile. I pick a large mouse and devour it in a few swift bites.

"Alright. Let's go see the kits." I tell Dovefur and Wavepelt as they emerge. We walk over to the nursery and slip inside.

"Hello, Tenderheart." I greet the sandy colored queen.

"Aren't they beautiful?" Wavepelt sighs, gazing down at the fluffy kittens nudging Tenderheart's belly.

"Thank you so much." Tenderheart purrs, gazing proudly at her kits. I gaze at them too, wondering...

I can imagine me, sitting in this spot, my own kits nuzzling me... I imagine having a kit with grey tabby fur, rippling in the wind, and deep blue eyes...

I can't stop thinking about him. I can't help but wonder... is this meant to be? Could the handsome young warrior be my one?
