Prompt: Respond to this sentence "We are our language"
If we are our language, and people refuse to acknowledge a language, then people might try to define your identity. However one does not have to accept it, and conform to this identity.
If society refuses to accept someone because of their identity, then two things can and will happen. A: the person will conform with what society will accept, their standards, and B: The person will decide that they don't care what society thinks and continue being themselves and take on being an outcast as a part of their identity. And of course a person can have an identity separate from society, thus becoming an outcast. Lots of people have two identities. They are someone when among society, at school, work, practice, rehearsal... but then they are someone else when they are at home or alone. Most people will choose to conform to society's standards, they will pretend to be someone else just to feel included. However no one should have to ever conform to society. People should just be more open-minded and accepting of different people, and different cultures, sexualitys, gender identities, traditions, languages, religions, and everything in between.
People have the right, without exception, to make their own identity. People should never be prevented from making their own identity, people should never have to hide their identity, or not be allowed to be who they are. When people are oppressed because of who they are, they get angry, they can get violent. Take the African Americans from before the civil rights movement. And how women were oppressed before the Women's suffrage movement. No one should be oppressed because of something they can't control. However if they are unable to control say a psychopathic tendency to kill, then of course said person should be hospitalized. However, people should be allowed to be whoever they want to be, and never be forced to mold to society's standards.
And if someone tries to do so, for example when Donald Trump tried to pass a bill that would outlaw people from legally changing their gender, and basically outlaw being anything but cisgender. Then there will be trouble. If trans people aren't allowed to be themselves, if gender-fluid and gender neutral people won't be recognized by the government, then people would be angry.
If the government tries to stop people from being free to be who they are, then we as a country, as people who identify as whatever is being oppressed, have friends or family who identity as whatever's being oppressed, than it is our job to stand up for them. And it is our duty as citizens of a country that claims to give freedom to all peoples, to stand up for the little people, the people who are unable to stand up for themselves, the people who are too afraid of openly being part of the LGBT community, or have a religion that is stereotyped as evil, or who face racism and hate and persecution. It's our job as citizens of a democracy, of a country that was founded on freedom and equality for all, to defend these beliefs and make sure that everyone is treated as such.
