Tris stopped herself from knocking as she realized that she only had Jeanine's coat, and not her sweater. She then paces in front of the woman's office, debating if she should still follow through with the plan. Before she can make her mind up, Jeanine opens the door, talking to someone over her shoulder. She knocks Tris over and jerks her head towards her.
"You just keep finding your way back into my life, don't you, Prior?" Jeanine asks. "honestly, you and your father both." She then offers a hand out to help the girl up from the ground. Tris stares at it. "What do you think I'm going to do? Drop you?" Jeanine asks sarcastically, rolling her eyes slightly.
Tris stares at her and eventually takes her hand. Jeanine pulls her up into a standing position, and Tris then bends down to grab Jeanine's jacket. She then looks up at her. "This is for you, Ma'am," she says nervously, handing her the coat. For the first time, Tris notices that Jeanine's shoulders were bare, which she decided was her fault. Jeanine notices Tris staring, and raises an eyebrow. Tris turns red slightly and looks away as Jeanine slips the jacket on. "Hey, I'm sorry about last night," she says uncomfortably.
Jeanine looks around the hallway and pulls the girl into her office. Tris stares at two men dressed in black, standing and discussing something on her desk. One she recognized to be Eric. "Eric, Max," Jeanine says with a nod. "You may leave now. That is all," she says, propping the door open with her foot. The men grab the papers off her desk and they exit. "I'll expect to see you two next week!" She calls after them. She then gracefully walks across the room and takes a seat at her desk, crossing her legs. Tris stares at her for a few seconds. "Come. Sit down," Jeanine says with a small smile.
Tris slowly walks over to her desk and takes a seat facing her. "What can I help you with?"
"I would like to know every single thing I did last night, Miss Prior."
"Where would you like me to start?" Tris asks quietly.
"First of all. Did we sleep together?" She asks. "Cause the last time I woke up with someone else in my bed after being drunk we had..." she trails off, not wanting to say anything more.
This question catches Tris off guard. "No- what? Why would we? You could barely dress yourself you were so drunk."
"Did I do anything I'd regret?" Jeanine asks.
"You asked me for a few things..." Tris says uncomfortably.
"Please continue."
"You asked me to stay, first of all," Tris starts. "Then you asked for help putting your pajamas on. Jeanine sighs and stares at her, waiting for the girl to continue.
"And you cried in front of me," Tris adds.
"There's something you're not telling me," Jeanine says, eyeing Tris. She mumbles something under her breath. "I didn't catch that, please repeat," Jeanine says.
Tris takes a deep breath. "You might have kissed me. Twice," she says quietly.
"I did what?" She asks loudly. Jeanine bites her lip and rests her head in her hands. "I'm sorry for that, Tris. I didn't mean anything by it. I was drunk and I didn't realize what I was doing." Tris almost seems slightly disappointed as her shoulders fall slightly. Jeanine stares at her.
"Jeanine, I mean, Miss Matthews. Can I ask you something?"
"You might as well call me Jeanine. After last night, I think it's fitting," she says, mumbling the last part. She sighs. "But ask away."
"Do you uh, by any chance, happen to like girls?" Tris asks awkwardly.
Jeanine stares at her. "Why should it matter if I do or not?" She asks casually.
"I'm just wondering after last night. I don't really care. Just curious, Jeanine," Tris replies awkwardly.
"I'm not sure yet."
"Pardon?" Tris asks quietly.
"I'm answering your question. I'm not sure yet," Jeanine says with a shrug. "Although you probably should've warned me it was such a personal question. Such questions tend to catch people off guard," Jeanine says quietly. She then shuffles some papers on her desk. "How would you feel if I asked you that question?"
Tris hesitates, knowing Jeanine has a point. "I guess I'd tell them the truth," she says after a long beat of silence.
"And that is?"
"I think I like both," she mumbles with a shrug.
"May I ask why we're having this conversation? Miss Prior?" Jeanine asks, slightly annoyed.
"Because. It would make this next thing arhat I'm about to do, super awkward," Tris whispers. She quickly gathers her courage, then stands up and leans over the desk. Jeanine freezes as she feels her lips meet Tris'. When Tris pulls away, it feels like an eternity but was in reality only a few seconds. Tris heads for the door, but Jeanine stops her.
"Tris? Come back please," she says quietly.
Tris looks back at her. "Listen, I'm sorry. Okay? I just wanted to-"
"You wanted to kiss me. That's fine."
"Yeah. Forget it," Tris mumbles.
Jeanine shushes her and summons the girl back. "I don't know how I feel about this yet, but could I ask you something?" Tris nods and Jeanine proceeds. "Would it bother you to try that again?" She asks.
Tris seems surprised and walks back to her desk. "I think I could," she whispers. This time she walks over to Jeanine's side. She awkwardly placed a hand in the side of her face, brushing away some hair. Jeanine stares at Tris, this time she leans forward a bit. Tris' lips meet hers, and this time, Jeanine kisses back. After a second she pulls away and stands up.
"I'm sorry, Beatrice. I shouldn't have done that. You realize how bad of an idea it is for me to get more involved in your life than what is necessary, right?" Jeanine doesn't give her a chance to answer before exiting the room. Tris sighs and chews on her thumbnail lost in thought. She knew Jeanine was right, but she couldn't get over the way "Beatrice" sounded as it rolled off of Jeanine's tongue. No matter how much she hated her name, Tris liked it and wanted to hear Jeanine say her name again.
