Neither Jeanine nor Tris had any idea that Joanna and Audrey's new life goal was to set them up. Audrey was acting normal, but Joanna had seemed off to Jeanine, and Jeanine was determined to find out why.
Jeanine headed to Joanna's dorm in an attempt to find her. She walks in on her laying on the ground next to Audrey. The floor is littered with books, brochures, and notebooks. The two lookup and both quickly collect the things off of the floor into a neat stack before Jeanine could see them. "Uh, what was that?" Jeanine asks suspiciously, raising an eyebrow at the pair.
Joanna hesitates. "I Feel Bad, you know? So I just asked Audrey to help me."
"Oddly descriptive," Jeanine mutters sarcastically.
"You know, the whole Elise thing?" Joanna asks.
"I thought you two were fine?" Jeanine says, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, but I haven't done anything nice for her in a while," Joanna says with a small sigh. "So I decided to ask Audrey to help me plan something to surprise her."
Jeanine stares at her for a long time, not blinking. "You know what? I kind of forgot what I was going to ask you. I'm just going to go now," she says, hurriedly leaving the dorm. Joanna and Audrey let out a huge breath as soon as she's gone and burst into laughter at Jeanine's behavior.Jeanine heads to her office where Eric was pacing in front of the door. He stops and stands up straight, facing her as she stops.
"What are you here for?" she asks, looking up at him.
"I'm here to give you an update on a Divergent," he states in a monotone voice.
"Why personally? Why not just text me?" Jeanine asks, at this moment, she does actually pull out her phone to check it before looking back up at Eric.
Eric sighs and gestures her into the office. "Sit down," he commands.
"You don't get to tell me what to do," Jeanine remarks. She then sets her things down and leans on the desk. "Fine. Are you happy now?" She asks, sounding slightly irritated.
Eric sighs. "I honestly don't care, Jeanine. I just know that you have happened to take a liking to this one. That's all."
In her head, Jeanine started listing out all of the people they were monitoring that she didn't hate—which sadly amounted to about no one. "Who is it?" she asks.
"Beatrice Prior. The stiff," Eric responds flatly.
"Don't call her a stiff! She's not one any- Wait a minute. You said she was Divergent?"
Eric nods. "Yeah. I did,"
Jeanine suddenly looks terribly sad. "Are you crying?" Eric asks after a few seconds, softening his voice as he stares at her.
"No. I'm just so upset with myself. Of all the people whom I could've decided I liked, it had to be a Divergent," she mutters.
Eric chokes on his spit. "You like her?" he asks loudly.
"Ugh. Not in that way. She's Divergent, remember?" Jeanine asks with a slight eye roll. Deep down, she felt terrible. For herself, and for Tris.
"Do we want to take her into custody yet, or kill her?" Eric asks.
"Wait until initiation day. You know what the plan is. We'll round all of the Divergents up then, and we can see what happens.
Eric nods. "Very well then." He slowly proceeds to exit the office, leaving Jeanine leaning on the desk, her thoughts muddled with confusion.Tris sighs as Audrey bursts into the library and runs over to her table. "You do realize this is a library, right?" she asks. Tris takes her glasses off and looks up to face the girl.
"Yes, I'm aware," Audrey says with a shrug.
"You're also not in Dauntless anymore, Dorothy," she mutters.
"I thought it was 'You're not in Kansas anymore', not Dauntless," Audrey says, a confused look on her face.
"You clearly don't get the concept of joking," Tris mutters. She bookmarks her page. "So, what's up?"
"Would you, like, want to have dinner somewhere just the two of us on Friday? We really haven't had a girl's night in like, forever."
"That's because we've never had a girl's night, Audrey," Tris says.
"Please? It'll be fun..." she responds with a small smile.
Tris hesitates. "Fine. I'll go," she says after a long moment of silence.
"Yay!" Audrey says loudly. She is shushed by a nearby initiate. "Sorry," she whispers back to them. Tris rolls her eyes as Audrey skips out of the library.
Joanna had entered Jeanine's office and found her to be an emotional wreck. She was sitting in the corner, looking like she was trying very hard not to cry.
"What's wrong?" Joanna asks kindly, heading over to her. Jeanine stays quiet and pulls her legs tighter to her body. "Jean," she says, sternly, trying not to seem panicked. "What's wrong?" Joanna's cousin never cried. Almost everyone in the faction knew that.
This time, Jeanine looks up at the girl. "I'm going to have to kill her. I'm going to have to kill Tris," she whispers.
Joanna sits down next to her and pulls her into a hug. They sit there like that, with Jeanine sobbing into Joanna's shoulder.
