Full Disclaimer: I wrote this chapter while half asleep. Honestly I kept it because I wanted an update. Lol.
————————————————————"Jeanine!" Tris calls, running after her out of court. She wraps an arm around Jeanine, catching up to her. "What happened back there?" she asks quietly.
Jeanine just shakes her head, not seeming to want to answer her question.
"You can talk whenever you're ready," Tris says, noting Jeanines refusal.
"I'm sorry," Jeanine. whispers.
"What for?"
"For everything," Jeanine responds. "The attack, not being honest with you . . . all of it."
"First of all, you aren't to blame for the attack. You tried to help, Jean. Second, it's not that you weren't being honest with me. Sometimes we all need to take time before we tell someone something. There's no use saying things before we are ready."
Jeanine nods. "I suppose I have to stop being the mysterious lover eventually," she whispers. "I kinda feel like I owe it to you to tell you about my past."
"In your own time, you will."
The two are interrupted as Joanna runs over to talk to the Jeanine.
'Joanna! I haven't seen you in a while!" Jeanine says, taking the girls hand and giving it a small squeeze before releasing it. This was a gesture that Joanna had started when she was a toddler, having first realized Jeanine was not big on being touched.
"It's good to see you again!" the girl explains. "I feel like it's been so long."
Jeanine nods. "Did you see the trial?" she asks quickly.
"I caught the first part. I didn't get much past the part about your middle name. I don't even think I knew that one," she responds.
"Don't feel bad, I didn't either," Tris jokes.
Jeanine sighs. "Good. I kinda of fell apart back there, and you didn't need to see that, Joanna."
'Jeanine, I'm part of your family. The entire point of having family is to have someone to lean on when you are struggling," Joanna replies. "You know I'm here for you whenever you need me. Tris is too," she says, spotting the two a smile. "I think she's classified as part of your family too now."
Jeanine nods, forcing a smile at the girl. "I'll leave you two now," Joanna says.
"Jeanine," Tobias says, walking over. "There's a faction leaders meeting. Or at least what is left of the faction leaders. I don't know if you're still calling yourself one, but Erudite needs a representative so . . ."
"Thank you for informing me, Mr. Eaton. May I follow you?" Jeanine asks, quickly changing her display of emotions and resuming her 'leader' tone of voice.
He nods and walks off. Jeanine quickly follows him. Tris goes with. She reaches out to hold Jeanine's hand, but the woman doesn't seem to notice, leaving a slightly confused Tris.
She doesn't say anything as the reach the area that the leaders were using as a meeting room.
"Where's Jack?" Jeanine asks.
"He's just finishing up in the court. Johanna is here too. She's on her way. Jeanine nods, hovering close to the door.
"Is everyone at Candor?" Johanna asks, walking into the room.
"I mean, Andrew, Marcus, you, me, Jack. Then whatever is happening with Dauntless," Jeanine responds.
Marcus takes a seat in a chair, placing his feet on the chair across from him. "Last time we had a meeting, I remember discussing if Jeanine was a lesbian," he starts. Jeanine rolls her eyes and looks away from him. "Don't do that. You literally brought your girlfriend."
