The next morning, Tobias and Tris leave the factionless headquarters and head to the Candor sector of the city. She doesn't mention what she overheard him and Evelyn discussing last night, as she knew she wasn't supposed to have overheard anyways. Tris closes her eyes as they take the train ride, trying to think. "What happens when we get there?" Tris asks.
"Well, candor is where most of the dauntless have gone to seek refuge. I say I introduce you to some of my friends. And of course, we will try to win over Jack Kang for our cause."
"Our cause to destroy the faction system?" Tris asks Tobias. He stops walking and turns back to look at her.
"What the hell did you just say?" He asks.
"I just asked for clarification about our plan, chill," Tris responds.
"Did you overhear me talking to my mother- Evelyn last night?" He asks gruffly.
"Yes I did," Tris says in a small voice.
"And how do you feel about it?"
"Well, I'm still here, aren't I?" Tris asks him.
He sighs. "That's my mother's plan. Not mine. I don't like hers very much."
Tris nods. "I get that. Kids tend to disagree with their parents too much..."
"What happened with yours?" He inquired.
"She passed away during the attack, remember?" She asks.
Tobias pauses and then nods. "We're at our stop. Time to get off."
The two jump off the train and walk up to the front of Candor headquarters, where they are promoted to provide identification. As soon as they say their names, the guards grab them. Tobias tries to fight them, while Tris just looks around in bewilderment, clearly confused. The guards lead them to a prison cell, in which they are thrown in. Tobias yells for a while. "You can't just throw us in here without any explanation!"
Eventually, Jack Kang comes by. "Do you know why there is a warrant out for both of your arrests?" He asks them.
The two both shake their head in unison, in a state of confusion.
"Both of you have been recorded on the city video cameras as being with or working for Jeanine on the night of the attack."
"But Jeanine didn't attack! Eric did!" Tris protests. "Jeanine tried to stop him from killing all the innocent abnegation!"
Jack Kang shushes her. "I don't care what you say here. You will be given the truth serum and put on trial in front of the jury. We'll see if you still say the same thing," he says before walking off.
Until later on in the day, Tris and Tobias are left to basically pace in their cell, worrying about their upcoming trial. When a guard finally came to collect them, Tris seemed to be relieved. Tobias was to be put on trial first. He was given the truth serum, and Jack Kang started to ask questions.
"What's your name?" he asks.
"Four," he automatically responds.
It was at that moment that Tris realized the effects of the truth serum. It made you tell the truth, but you could choose which version of the truth to tell.
"And your full name?"
"Tobias Eaton," he says.
Tris seems to tune out the rest of the interview until she hears an echo of voices saying "Thank you for your Candor."
"Next we call up Tris Prior," Jack Kang announces. Tris is gently led to the middle of the large room where she is injected with the Truth Serum.
"What is your name?" Jack asks.
"Tris. Beatrice. Beatrice Prior," she speaks.
"Faction of birth and chosen faction?"
"I was born Abnegation, and then transferred to Erudite," Tris speaks clearly.
"Is it true that you are dating Jeanine Matthews?"
"Why does everyone ask me that?" Tris asks aloud.
"Just answer the question," Jack says harshly.
"Yes. She is my girlfriend. Do you have a problem with that?"
"Not if you can clear yours and her name," Jack says with a nod. "What happened the night of the attack?"
Tris spends the better part of the next fifteen minutes providing a detailed account of everything that she remembered happening that night.
"One last question," Jack states. "What is your deepest regret?"
At this one, Tris starts to cry slightly. "My mother. She's dead. And I killed her," she says through tears.
"You killed your mother?" Jack asks.
Tris shakes her head. "No . . . she . . . I . . . She went on a suicide mission to stop It . . . and it's all my fault . . ." she gets out. "This is what happens to people when they get close to me . . . They die . . ."
"That's enough. Thank you for your Candor."
"Thank you for your Candor," the entire jury repeats. Tris is led out of the courtroom, and she is standing next to Tobias.
"That was a brave thing to admit out there," Tobias says.
Tris shakes her head. "No, I'm not brave. I'm not like you."
"I can see it in your eyes. One of your aptitudes has to be Dauntless. I know that you are Divergent, as it's quite obvious, but you seek Adrenaline. You weren't scared when I jumped on the train. You didn't ask questions. You just did it. And that is how I know."
Tris smiles at him. "Thank you," she whispers, giving him a hug.
"The jury has reached a verdict," a guard says, leading them back into the courtroom.
The entire room is silent as Jack stands up. "The jury has reached a verdict," he repeats. "They have ruled both Beatrice Prior and Tobias Eaton, Innocent." whispers break out in the court from those who were anti-divergent. "This court session is now adjourned," he announces. Tris was so excited that she gave Tobias a hug.
He tenses. "Woah there. You already went over your limit today. Do you really want to chance it again?" he asks with a small smirk.
"Nope. You're scary," she jokes.
The two are immediately met by two girls. "Hi, I'm Christina," the first one says.
"And the other is Marlene," Tobias says.
"I can talk for myself, thank you very much," she retorts, ruffling Tobias' hair.
"We should introduce her to the others!" Christina says excitedly before pulling Tris off.
