Chapter thirteen
Tuesday 7:00am
I was woken up to mum pushing my shoulder.
“Wake up Alice”
I opened then reclosed my eyes and turned over.
“Alice, get up. You have school”
“Not today mum”
“Yes, get up”
“Mum not today, I don’t want to today”
“You have to go to school”
“Or what?” I try to shrug her off. It doesn’t work.
“Just get up” She snapped back.
“No”
“Get up, maybe Jake will take you to school” she sounded sarcastic, a mean sarcastic.
“What’s that meant to mean” I said turning to her.
“It means I think you’ve seen way too much of that boy”
“What?”
“He’s a bad influence, since him you’ve been acting different, dressing different and well, being a bitch” Did my mother just say that? I mean my mother, sweet and innocent Mary. She just said I, her daughter was a bitch. I mean what universe am I in?
“What? Did you just?”
“Yes, I called you a bitch because that’s how you’re acting and it’s because of that boy!”
“No, it’s not. Don’t blame him because I decided to grow up!”
“Yes it is and I will blame him because you were already ‘grew’ up and now you’ve gone back to a disobedient teen”
“Disobedient? Are you kidding? I do everything you ask and more!”
“When? Before or after you’re done with that boy?”
“What?”
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing”
“What am I doing mum?” I said in that sarcastic, questioning voice.
“I know you’re getting paid to date him, but quick question did you get extra for having sex with him?” I stood there with my mouth wide open, how on earth did she know. And since when would she say sex, she was so innocent and now she’s calling me a bitch and saying I’m having sex.
“Who told you?” I said, my voice and head lowering.
“I’m your mother I know everything.” She said turning around “Now get up and get ready for school” she added. I did as she said.
In the car it was dead silent.
“Mum?” I said in a low and questioning voice. I turned to her as watched as she continued to drive.
“What?” she said staring out the window into the distance.
“How’d you find out?”
“I worked it out, you suddenly had money, new wardrobe, new friend and a guy. I saw the girl out the front hand you money then you went straight upstairs and called the boy. I assumed she had something to do with the boy and the money meant she was paying you for something and well you wouldn’t normal go for that type of guy” I got confused about the last part, what did she mean I wouldn’t go for that ‘type’?
“What ‘type’ is Jake and why wouldn’t I go out with him by myself?”
We pulled up to the school; she looked at me and spoke.
“Jake, is the type of heartbreaker, the jock, the not-so-smart jock. Gets any girl, gets C’s and well only just finishes school. I know you, well I did and you wouldn’t go out with someone like that, you knew better than a heartbreaker.” She was kind of right, that was Jake. But now he’s different.
“He’s different, he’s not a heartbreaker and I do know better” I said getting out of the car and slamming the door.
