Chapter nine
I stormed angrily to the hospital doors.
“Alice, I’m sorry” I heard in the distance.
I turned and said.
“I told you how I really felt, how I feel. You made me think about what I was feeling, why I was feeling it. You made me feel like because I liked you, I had done something wrong. You don’t know how it feels to spill your heart out and get told to get out”
“I know and I’m sorry, I don’t know what else to say”
“You knew, you knew you were going to have to get my out the car, why did you ask?”
“I needed to know”
“Need is an awfully strong word”
“I..I...I just wanted to know if you liked me too”
“Well now, I’m not too sure”
I couldn’t handle it anymore. I turned away and ran off crying.
I walked into the hospital, the lady behind the desk noticed I was crying.
“Are you okay dear, would you like a tissue, or some help?” I heard from behind the large, brown desk.
“Um, yeah. Can you tell me what room John Harper is in?” I could hear her typing, she was on a really old type of computer that made a lot of noise.
“Third floor, room 19. Do you need any help?”
“No, thank you”
I follow the directions on the walls and finally come to the closed door with a sign saying ‘’Room 19”.
I felt a hand on my shoulder, I turned to see mum. She holds her hands out for me; I walk into her arms and put my head on her shoulder.
“Can you tell me what happened?”
“Dad was driving home from work and well David ran a red light. He hit dad’s side and well”
“Why didn’t you want me to know?”
“I wanted you to find out from me and I knew you were going through things with friends and I didn’t want to worry you or make it worse”
“I love you mum” I said, hugging tighter. I meant it, I mean I hadn’t told her that I was going through things with friends she just noticed.
We walked in dad’s hospital room together, when I saw dad in the hospital bed I squeezed mums hand tighter. She just looked at me and gave me the only smile she could built up. I saw dad lying as still as everything. He slept silently and I watched patiently.
“Why is he still in hospital, he looks fine and David’s out already isn’t he?”
“Well, when they checked to see if everything was okay they noticed that he had a weird mole on his back so they checked it out and he has cancer”
“How come we didn’t already know?” I said with tears streaming down my face.
“Dad said he knew but didn’t want to tell us until he was positive it was cancer, he had an appointment next week. The doctor said he has a few weeks left”
I sat on the chair next to his bed, put my face into my hands and cried my eyes out. Mum rubbed my back and it made me feel a little better.
I spent the rest of the night in the hospital with dad, mum did too but around 12 o’clock she left. I don’t know where she went, but she came back around 3 but didn’t say a word.
Monday
7:30 am
A hand was pushing me trying to wake me up,
“Alice, get up. You have to get ready for school”
I opened my eyes; we were still in the hospital. Dad was asleep still, he was throwing up at around 4ish and couldn’t get back to sleep.
“What do you mean? I’m not going to school”
“You’ve missed almost all week last week, you need to be in school”
“Mum...” I said trying to get out of it.
“You’re going to school, I got your uniform and your school stuff, go get ready” she said handing me the bag.
"And don't forget this" She said handing me my still cold phone.
