Chapter nineteen
“Jake?” I said into the echoing speakers of my cell phone. I awaited an answer, an answer that didn’t come. I repeated the question, he still didn’t answer. I didn’t know what to say, I said the first thing that came to mind.
“Do you hate me?” I was about to hang up, since the question I just asked was not important at a time like this. Although I heard a voice arise from the other end.
“Alice? You are an idiot” he said it in that exhausted voice. I began to stutter out letters like ‘I’ and ‘W’.
“Alice, I can never hate you. You were mad, I get it. You have just lost your father; I cannot expect you to be okay with that” Just hearing him say that made me smile. He continued…
“Will you go to prom with me?”
“I would love to” I said with the biggest smile on my face.

“Mum?” I said walking into the kitchen, I leaned against the doorway.
“Yes, dear?” She said, washing dishes.
“Um, can we go shopping? Like stuff for prom?” I couldn’t see her face but I could tell she smiled. She dropped the dish into the sink, wiped her hands on her shorts and turned to me. She walked over to me and put her arms around me.
“You are a beautiful girl, sweetheart” she whispered, still holding me in her arms. I was unsure whether I was meant to hug her back so I stood there awkwardly with my arms down my side.

I opened the door and stepped out the car. Mum had been speaking about this place since we got in the car. It looked like a vintage house, two stories with pillars holding up a balcony.
“Doesn’t look like much, but they have some amazing stuff” She said walking around the car, towards me. I nodded as we walked towards the front door. Mum rang the doorbell, all I could think was ‘why does a shop have a doorbell?’ A lady, long, blonde hair and blue eyes opened the door. "Jessica!” she squealed. I guessed that they knew each other. Mum smiled and spoke,
“Ally! Great to see you!”
“It’s finally time for prom?” ‘Ally’ said looking at me. Mum nodded, Ally gestured us inside. I just smiled and followed mum. Mum walked inside and turned right, it was obvious she knew where she was going. The room was full of standing manikins; they all were beautiful but none stood out to me. Mum and Ally walked straight past all the perfect, sequined and laced dresses. They walked around a corner; I followed not knowing what was happening or where we were going. They walked up a flight of stairs, neither of them turned to see if I was following. I looked at my feet as I stepped up each stair, I usually fall or miss a step. I reached the top and lifted my head to see a room full with even more perfect dresses. These ones made the ones done stairs look like a year 7 graduation dresses. I stood with my mouth opened. I walked over a grabbed the bottom of the closest dress. It was a peach coloured dress, it was strapless with a silver lining around the top of the dress. It was beautiful. As I ran the material through my fingers a dress caught my eye. It was a beautiful white, it wasn’t exactly white, well, it was mixed with a faint yellow. It had thin straps linking to a material which wrapped around the stomach. Under the stomach, the dress material changed to a material which was poofy, its gold tint made it look beautiful.
“I think she’s found it” Ally said smiling.
“The perfect dress” Mum agreed.
I didn’t pay any attention to them, I was too focused on the stunning dress.
