Chapter eight
I walked up to the door impatiently and confused. I didn’t know what I had done, was it because I wanted to be more? Was it because he doesn’t like me? Once I got inside I went straight up to my bedroom and got on the phone to Samantha, it was about three o’clock. The phone rang and rang, she didn’t pick up. I tried Jake, same with him. Did she tell Jake, I mean tell him everything? She wouldn’t, she couldn’t. I stayed awake until five wondering if I was right, maybe this was her plan from the beginning. I don’t know, the one thing I do know is tomorrow I’m staying in bed.
Sunday Afternoon
The whole day I tried to sleep but my phone kept going off, with texts and calls.
“What’s wrong, why’d you try and call me last night?” from Samantha,
“We need to talk” from Jake, and so many more. There were over 16 missed calls, and that was just by Samantha. I just needed to be away from it, I just wanted one day, one day to just be the ordinary and boring me. As I tried to sleep another phone call started to come through, my ringtone started to annoy me so much, I grabbed the phone, ran down stairs and threw it into my freezer. After that I couldn’t hear it anymore, I went back upstairs and jumped into bed. This was perfection, silence.
I was asleep for three hours until I heard a noise out the front. I went straight to my window and looked outside. Jake was there, sitting on the front lawn.
“What are you doing?”
“I need to speak to you and you wouldn’t answer the door” even if I was awake I would have left it for mum or dad to get it, as I walked downstairs to open the door for him I noticed they weren’t home. I noticed a note on the fridge,
‘Went to grandma’s for the night, there’s food in the fridge. See you tomorrow xoxo’
I walked to the door and took a big breath in before opening it.
“What do you want?”
“We need to talk”
“Why don’t we start with, why you kicked me out your car last night”
“I can’t tell you”
“What do you mean you can’t tell me, what did you come here to tell me then?”
“I don’t know, I just needed to see you”
“Well you didn’t feel that way last night!” Once I finished I slammed the door his him face. I leaned against the door and slowly slid down. I felt like he did the same on the other side. I felt connected to him in a way.
After a few minutes, I heard him talking to someone. I recognised the voice, it was Samantha. I tried to listen to the conversation but I couldn’t. They talked for a little while then I started to hear yelling.
“Well leave then” I heard Samantha shout.
“Why don’t you, because unlike you I actually want to help her”
“Is that why you’re outside or would it be why you still haven’t told her?”
I opened the door, “Told me what?” I said, scared to know the answer.
“It’s your dad, he’s in hospital”
“What do you mean?” my voice had gotten louder.
“David and your dad were in a car accident. David called me at the lake and told me to come get him at the hospital because he had been in a crash. Your mum was there and told him that she didn’t want you to find out like this so I had to get you out the car and I couldn’t say anything. I’m so sorry”
“Take me to the hospital”
“But…” I didn’t want to know what he was going to say. I wanted to see my father and I wanted to see him now.
“Take me to the hospital”
We got into his car and started to drive off, Samantha stood awkwardly on my front lawn as we did.
“I’m sorry” Jake said pulling up to the sidewalk.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“David said…”
“I don’t care, I think I had a right to know” I budded in before getting out of the car and slamming the door.
