CHIBANA KASUMI WAS SENTENCED TO BEING BENCHED FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR. after realizing that her recurring migraines from the concussion would make it impossible to play on court full-time again, especially since a libero was supposed to go in and out seamlessly whenever defense was necessary, kasumi was forced out of the starting lineup again. instead, she would be forced to be a pinch server... again.

so, kasumi quit.

it was a decision that hurt her so much that chibana kasumi ended up crying in her room for a week afterwards. it was a combination of the frustration of never being able to play an actual game when her chronic migraines were triggered by intense physical activity and exhaustion, the shame of quitting the team after failing them, and the anger she felt at herself for not paying attention well enough during the game.

her time on the court as a libero had been too short. she wanted to experience the satisfaction, just once, of seeing her good efforts to wards winning something good. just once, kasumi wanted to see her save make all the difference in making or breaking a deuce. she had gone out as fast as she came in.

her older sister akari would come check on her and give her food before and after her shifts at sendai sushi. her younger brother taro would come in and just hug her while they laid in her bed together before leaving to play games with his friends. oikawa and iwaizumi came a few times to check on her after their practice, but her room lights were turned off and she had buried herself in her bedsheets.

after a week of mourning over her lost volleyball career, kasumi grew restless sitting in her room after school alone. she ended up showing up to the boys' volleyball practices instead so she could lightly practice what she could. iwaizumi and oikawa greeted her and introduced her to the other members of the kitagawa daiichi boys' volleyball team and asked her to help the first years on their form. (to be honest, they were just glad they could help her in the best way they could.)

"tooru, your serves are getting sloppy," kasumi commented after counting his steps and seeing his hand slam down on the volleyball. "you also miscounted your steps on that serve."

"doing it again," oikawa said, seeming a little more irritated now that kasumi was pointing out obvious mistakes he was making.

it was ten minutes after regular practice had ended. the coach had given iwaizumi the keys and told him to give it back in the morning so they could finish practicing. they seemed to be the only ones in the gym, the rest of the team quickly evacuating out after the allotted time slot for practice. the slower ones were still leaving the gym.

iwaizumi took a volleyball from the cart. "hey wait, it's my turn now."

"one more time," oikawa said again, taking his time to count out the steps and get a good footing for the serve. he swung his arm out and slammed it into the ball.

kasumi's careful eyes watched the blue and yellow ball hit just past the end line. she used the referee's motions, raising her arms up and shouting, "out! too much power, tooru. your aim is getting better, though."

feeling disgruntled, oikawa moved out of the way and let iwaizumi step up to serve. the spiky-haired boy looked at kasumi, who was observing from the opposite side of the court and pointed a finger at her. "if you receive this, i'll buy you lunch tomorrow."
