A LOT OF PEOPLE FORGET THAT SUNA RINTARO'S BEST FRIEND IS A GIRL. and, it was easy to forget about it too. after seeing miya atsumu and shirofuku momoka, it was easy to just assume that both of their lives just revolved around each other and that was it. maybe osamu was important too, but that was just technicalities.

suna rintaro grew up in the aichi prefecture before he came to hyogo and spoke the standard tokyo dialect. in his last year of junior high, coach kurosu had come to one of his games and scouted him to come to inarizaki high school to play for their volleyball team. their school was no joke, scouting someone from aichi. but, even if he slacked off a lot, suna rintaro considered himself to be passionate in volleyball so he moved to hyogo.

(apparently, it worked out since his dad had been trying to figure out a way to break to his kids that he wanted to move to the hyogo because of an elusive job offer.)

not that he didn't expect it before, but suna stuck out like a sore thumb. of course, not everyone in hyogo spoke with strong kansai accents, but suna definitely sounded like a city boy. it was the first thing that his desk partner noticed on his first day of school at inarizaki.

"yer accent sounds kinda funny," said the white-haired girl next to him. her hair was very long — even he could tell that despite the hair being tied up in a ponytail — and her brown eyes peered at him curiously.

"i'm from aichi," suna told her.

(at this point, neither of them knew each other's names.)

"hmm, aichi?" echoed the girl. "that's fun, i guess." she paused and looked at him for a little bit. "you play volleyball or somethin', aichi?"

suna tried not to notice too much that the girl didn't ask for his name and instead started calling him aichi. the worst part was that he couldn't even retaliate by calling her 'miss hyogo' or something else half-assed because the both of them lived in hyogo and he was the weirder one in this situation. in fact, he was so preoccupied by this he almost forgot to be shocked about the girl knowing he played volleyball.

"how did you know?" he asked her.

"just a guess," the girl replied. "you looked like a middle blocker or somethin'. if ya came from somewhere like aichi to hyogo, i figured it was because inarizaki's volleyball team. the other sports teams here aren't really that popular. basketball is popular here too, but i think yer more of a volleyball type than basketball."

her explanation really didn't make sense to suna at all. he just decided that whoever she was, she was just super smart. and that part didn't make sense either, because why would someone this smart be stuck in class 1-1 with someone like him? not that he was incredibly stupid, but schoolwork just wasn't his strong suit.

"i am a middle blocker," suna confirmed for her. "how did you know that?"

"my big bro koji played basketball in high school 'n' a bunch of his friends used to come over to our farm — oh and we got a peach farm," the girl explained to him. "i used to see a lotta basketball players, and ya don't look like one."

suna thought this was the most backwards conversation he had ever had in his life. he didn't know her name at all, but he somehow knew that her older brother's name was koji and he was a basketball player. on top of that, she owned a peach farm, which pretty much explained why he had been smelling peaches the entire morning.
