JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL WAS A DIFFERENT REALM IN AND OF ITSELF. now, it wasn't like chibana kasumi thought she would be the star libero of the team, especially in a well-established school like kitagawa daiichi junior high, but she also didn't expect to be the benched as soon as she got out of primary school. after all, she was a good player.

much like her best friends iwaizumi hajime and oikawa tooru, chibana kasumi started playing volleyball on a team in the fourth grade. yet, after hearing about how oikawa and iwaizumi had both gotten onto the starting lineup as first years, she couldn't help but feel frustrated.

her friends had told her that all she had to do was practice and they would surely see her talent, but she wasn't sure if it was because her pre-teen body was raging with hormones or what, because those words just made her more angry.

she wanted to be on the court! she was the best libero at her primary school!

"number 11, chibana. pinch server."

kasumi's grey eyes landed on the dark blue and white jersey that had been handed to her with shock. they trailed over to number 2, fukui... the actual libero. while kasumi had been strong in her serves after practicing so many times with oikawa and iwaizumi, her real strength was digging up balls. but, she was named as a pinch server without having the chance to be an extra libero.

"thank you!" she shouted out with the rest of the players on her team as they accepted their numbers and their positions.

over the course of the year, she had focused on learning the jump float serve from her senpais and perfected her spike serve. it was the only thing she could do to stay on court, considering that she hadn't made the starting line. it was the only thing she could do to not fall behind her friends who had begun to improve so rapidly.

"whaaat?" kasumi blinked at her friends as she joined their classroom for lunch. "tooru is captain now?"

"sure am!" oikawa grinned, pulling the dark blue no. 1 jersey out of his bag.

"i'm vice captain," iwaizumi added, nodding. he had stayed as no. 4, the number of the ace. "what 'bout you, umi?"

"hm," she hummed. "well, liberos aren't allowed to be captains. i let erika take the captain spot, so now i'm vice captain. i guess we're, like, soulmates or something, hajime."

the two of them laughed together at the joke.

as third years of junior high, the three had a lot that had gone on. iwaizumi hajime secured his spot as the kitagawa daiichi team's ace. oikawa tooru greatly improved his skills in volleyball, added on by the natural sense he had for the game. he had also powered up by learning powerful jump serves from kasumi, who was upgraded from being the pinch server to being the official libero for kitagawa daiichi's girls' volleyball team.

well, the only problem there was for them at all was that oikawa had slowly begun to lose himself in volleyball. he had not been playing for the thrill of seeing a spiker perfectly hit his toss or to receive a ball so keep his team in the game or to even spike a toss himself. no, there was a new face on the kitagawai daiichi team for the boys — a prodigy setter named kageyama tobio.
