JOINING THE NEKOMA HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' VOLLEYBALL TEAM WAS A WHIM'S DECISION. yukihyo kumiko had been seatmates and friends with nobuyuki kai since primary school, and he had asked her if she wanted to be the volleyball club's manager. completely uninterested in getting involved in sports, kumiko declined because she wanted to join the writer's club.

fast forward two days later where the writer's club rejected her application because "fanfiction isn't real literature," kumiko showed up at gymnasium two with newly-signed white form. unlike the writer's club, kumiko was able to find some refuge in the players. surprisingly enough, they were smarter than what she had originally credited her for.

"whatcha writing there, yuki-chan?" kuroo asked her, peering over her shoulder to see what she was writing down in her notebook. "doesn't look like match notes."

it was a regular occurrence for her to be writing down something in her notebook while they were playing matches. yukihyo kumiko had no interest and no expertise in helping them how to play. she was there to help out so they would have an easier time whenever they practiced and played matches. she filled up water bottles and watched the bibs, and that was pretty much it.

it was a far cry from what a normal manager usually did, but she was technically just there to make sure everything was okay. plus, she was a first year and barely even knew anything about volleyball to begin with. (not that anyone had bothered to teach her either.)

"a fanfiction," kumiko responded briefly, continuing to write without looking up. she had no other friends in the volleyball club other than nobuyuki kai and one of the senpais. normally, she was more outgoing, but all of the boys (minus two of them) were way taller than her. height was intimidating... which sucked because volleyball was largely a sport that benefitted from having extra height.

"a fanfiction? what about?" kuroo asked curiously, moving closer so he could get a better look.

"a game character," answered kumiko dismissively. sensing that something was bothering her about her friend's respomse (since when did kai call her 'yuki-chan'?), she finally set the notebook down to look up at him and widened her eyes. "you're not kai-kun."

"nice to meet you personally, yuki-chan. i'm kuroo tetsuro," the taller boy greeted her, sticking out his hand. "i know a bit about game characters."

kumiko's dark bluish-grey eyes narrowed at him. "do you know who nagase reiko is?"

"ridge racer," kuroo nodded, recognizing the game character and the game that they came from almost immediately. "very good choice, yuki-chan."

"call me kumiko," she nodded, brightly grinning. "i'll let you read it sometime, kuroo-kun."

"nah, call me tetsuro," kuroo nodded, sticking his tongue out at yaku morisuke who stood shocked a few ways away. (the bet was that kumiko would ignore him.)

ever since then, kumiko was included in the daily happenings of her grade's volleyball boys. there was her best friend nobuyuki kai, her editor/proof-reader kuroo tetsuro, and her volleyball tutor yaku morisuke. that is, yaku would tech her things about volleyball so she could easily transition into her role, kuroo would read her fanfiction on the train, and kai was her dependable best friend.
