RECENTLY, SUZUI AYANE HAD A GREAT PROBLEM. her roommate hirai nabiki, the president of the journalism club, asked her at the end of their second year at shiratorizawa if she realized that she's intimidating to other people. (of course, as her long-time roommate of three years and close friend, nabiki was immune to such presence.) encountered with the sudden knowledge that people may be afraid of her, ayane had adopted to many new mannerisms to seem less intimidating. after all, her greatest wish was just to be a doting older sister figure to the new members of the team.
to do such a thing, ayane started wearing a headband to look more approachable and relaxed. it was a minimal effort thing that she would be able to remember and wouldn't interfere with her daily activities. additionally, she made a resolution with herself to smile more often instead of keeping a straight and solemn-looking expression.
on top of that, ayane tried her best to be fun and pleasant, like other female managers in other teams. from what she saw, other teams seemed to like it when their cute female manager cheered them on.
she was specifically recalling from various team they saw at at nationals in different teams and also in the prefecture. inarizaki seemed to like their cute, white-haired manager that always wore a long ponytail, and aoba johsai seemed to like their bright brown-haired manager. so, suzui ayane decided that she must also be more cute and pleasant for her team to be inclined to open up to her.
so, in her best attempt to seem like a charming female manager, she lifted up her fist and said in the most positive (and yet surprisingly still somewhat flat) tone, "good luck."
the new shiratorizawa first years, who had been recently placed into the first string as pinch servers and backup players, suddenly became stiff as a board with pale faces as electrifying fear ran through their spinal cords.
together, they wondered if ayane was saying "good luck" as some short of double-sided message. instead of a message cheering them on, they wondered if she was really saying, "you all better do good on this practice match or else even luck won't be able to help you during practice." the fist seemed like more of a threat than a symbol of hard work to them.
even goshiki and kawainishi seemed to straighten up, even as members of the starting lineup. meanwhile, shirabu seemed to take this as a personal challenge (because ayane was the only setter he respected enough to properly set to ushijima).
seeing their underclassmen's reactions, the third years on the volleyball team turned their heads to the side and tried their hardest not to laugh.
"thank you, ayane," ushijima replied to her. "even so, we will be fine without luck."
of course, the continuation to his sentence that ayane understood was, "because we have a great team lineup."
the continuation to his sentence that the pinch servers heard was "because we will go through hell if we do not win."
yamagata shook his head, thinking the two of them were the same personality type. "that's so cruel."
reon, though, didn't seem to have much other thoughts about it. "i'm sure they're doing their best. interpersonal communications probably isn't their best strength, that's all."
