[R/D]chapter twenty three: highjack

Sam POV, flashback to 8 years ago~~~~~~~~~

I walk Into the class, we've been learning about the outside world, the zone outside the wall, and its really scary.

"Okay class, now, these are called 'the infected', they're people who caught a virus, that killed their brain and nervous system, then it took over, these things are completely inhuman, no matter how much they look like me or you."
Mrs. Ellin says.

"But Sam doesnt like them, Sam pees his pants when he hears one on the other side of the wall!"
The bully, Kevin, says, the class laughs.

"I can learn how to be brave, I'm only 7, I gotta learn how to be really good at killing them!"
I say.

"Please, you're such a baby, you'll never learn!"
Another classmate, Anna, says.

"Well...if I cant learn, I'll get someone to protect me! Like my mom has my dad!"
I say.

"Class, stop! There will be no fighting in this classroom!"
The teacher yells.

...I dont like these people, I keep getting told the people outside the wall are mean and evil, but so are the people in here...! At least I have Oliver...he'll always be there for me.

Flashback end~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I open my eyes and see I'm on the floor, the carriage is in flames and the horses are nowhere to be seen...and I dont see anyone around.

"Hey...ah....is anyone here?"
I call out, struggling to get up, my leg hurts badly.

As soon as I get up, I look around to find my friends, I realize what happened, there was a trap in a pothole, the horses mustve not seen it and tripped the mine.

"Hello??"
I call out, a feint whine comes from a building, and I run towards it, well, limp, my leg hurts pretty badly.

Its Jack and Noah, Jack has a petty decent chunk of his arm missing...he was in the front when the mine was triggered, he got more hurt than everyone else.

"Oh my....where's everyone else?"
I ask.

"We dont know...everyone was gone exept you, Noah dragged me in here to keep me safe....I feel like shit."
Jack says, wincing at the pain in his arm.

"I'll...I'll find the other, then we can leave...you'll be alright!"
I say, running out of the building.

(Y/n)'s the best fighter, right? They'll protect the others until I find them, then we can go and never come back.

...wait, why was there a mine in an abandoned town?

Oliver POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I feel so dizzy, what happened? I was in the carriage...then, I just...blacked out.

"Please wake up, come on...!"
I hear a feint voice say, my ears are ringing and everything is sore, I gather everything to open my eyes, and I see a panicked Toby above me.

"Toby...? What's wrong..?"
I ask, getting up, I see that I'm in a building, but I dont remember going in anywhere.

"Its hard to explain...there was a trap in the road, the carriage is broken and the horses are either dead or ran away from the noise...(y/n) found me and you, when I woke up a few minutes ago, they were trying to barricade us in, screaming about someone following us."
Toby explains.

"Following us? How do they know?"
I ask, just then, (y/n) enters the room with their hands full of bandages.

"Oh thank fuck you're awake..."
(Y/n) mumbles.

"Wheres the others?"
I ask.

"I only found you two, I did see Noah, but he was darting around and growling, there was so much smoke that I couldnt see much...but I saw a boy on a building."
(Y/n) explains.

"A boy? Whered he go?"
I ask.

"I dont know, he jumped off and I grabbed you two and ran, I made it into the building and heard running towards it, so I started blocking all the places he could get in."
(Y/n) says.

"...did you see Sam?"
I ask.

"No...I wish i did, but i couldnt keep looking once i saw the boy...but I'm going back."
(Y/n) says, Toby grabs their arms.

"You cant! If you're right and theres a boy waiting for you, you'll be killed before you find anyone!"
Toby says....I don't want them killed, they're a good combat soldier and a great friend, they can't die on me!

"Its the right thing to do, I couldnt live with myself If I knowingly stood by while Sam and the others could be killed at any second...!"
(Y/n) says.

"...I'm coming with you."
I say, standing up.

"No, you need to make sure the boy doesnt come in here, we'll all fall back until the smoke clears and we can fight, but to do that, you two need to make sure he wont get in, okay?"
(Y/n) explains.

"This is a shitty plan.."
Toby mumbles.

"Its either that or we all die."
(Y/n) says, grabbing the piece of wood they barricaded the door with and throwing it across the room.

They open the door and walk out, flashing a quick smile before closing the door behind them.

"...will they be okay?"
I ask.

"They're the best in our group, if there's anyone who can save us....let's hope its them."
Toby says.

Sam POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~

the smoke is so thick, I can't see a thing...I'm just wandering around, hoping I dont run into a wall.

"Hello?! (Y/n)?! Oliver!!"
I call out, shouting as loud as I can.

"Found one...."
A voice whispers, I turn around and scream, falling back.

"No, no no, please!"
I yell, the figure has a big butcher's knife, and they're making their way closer to me...I feel more helpless than I ever have, I close my eyes and curl up.

"You cant just-"
A loud thump fills my ears, and the figure is silent, I open my eyes and see no other than (y/n)....holding their axe, splattered with what I assume is the killers blood, and on the floor with me is a woman, missing a piece of her head.

....why am I not scared?
