CHAPTER 4
I tried to get inside without making too much noise, because I didn't want my parents, if they were even here, to know I was home for them to ask me a whole list of questions about my day, usually I wouldn't mind, but today was different. I stealthily made my way upstairs, making sure not to make any sudden movements. I could hear the shower going as I pressed my ear to the bathroom door that me and my sister shared, she didn't make it a habit of taking too long in the bathroom, but since I didn't know how long she was inside for, I went to my room, and changed into a pair of black jeans, and black sweat shirt together with my black cap since my sweat shirt had no hoodie attached to it. I grabbed my bookbag, and dropped a few snacks form my drawer and my digital camera. "Oh shit!", I exclaimed as I heard the shower turn off, and the door of the bathroom being closed, I went up to my door, and pressed my ear against it, I listened for when she would go into her room, but she didn't, "Jess, are you in there?", my sister asked through the door as she knocked three times. "I guess not,", she answered to herself.
I didn't even have time to hide properly as she was already turning the doorknob to my door, but luckily for me whenever my sister came into a room, she always opened the door wide open like it was nobody's business. "Where does she put her make-up?", she was still talking to herself tapping her index finger on her bare lips, "ah hah!, here it is", she exclaimed taking out my make-up bag that was wedged between the two pillows on my bed, when it was in her hands, she made her exit, closing the door behind her. I let out a sigh of relief as she left and made my way outside the house. Thinking this plan through thoroughly, I even went as far as to rent a car so that my sister would not be able to tell I was following her. I went to the rented car which I hid behind the hedge of bushes a little way from the house and sat there until she was ready to leave for her job.
Minutes after she jogged out from the house, keys in hand and her phone in the other, it wasn't long till she departed and I started following her. She drove for about fifteen minutes until she made a stop in front of somewhat large building with a neon sign that illuminated the words 'Frisky's Family Lounge', the name Frisky didn't really have a family friendly name, I mean Frisky, and I scoffed. I parked the car a good enough distance from the building and I waited until my sister came out of her car to start following her. She came out not long after I had parked my car and headed to the back of the ally way. I waited two minutes after she left her car to make sure she did not see me. I didn't want to draw attention to myself, so I acted like I needed to talk somewhere quiet, because the music coming from the building was a little loud, as it was karaoke night. I put my phone to my ear and plugged my other ear with my index finger from my other hand, and shouted hello as I made my way to the same ally my sister went through.
There was a door marked 'employees only', which is probably why she went through the back and not through the front. I guess I had no choice but to enter as a customer. As I entered, there was a lot of people gathered up to the front where the stage was where a couple was singing Rolling in the Deep by Adele, I took a booth as far away from lights, people and the stage a looked at the menu to blend in at least a little. I decided what I wanted, but only if a waitress came then I would place my order, in the meantime, I was on the lookout for my sister. Ten minutes passed, and she then came out from the back where the kitchen was wearing a short pencil skirt, and what I had assumed to be her employee t-shirt that had the same name of the restaurant on the top right-hand corner. A little while later a male waiter came and took my order, and I sat there eating slowly enough that no one had to come back to my table.
Two hours and a half passed and the job did seem normal enough, normal enough for me to think I should leave and let my sister alone and let her do her job. I got up to leave, and low and behold Kaleb frickin Anderson came through the door, with that stupid smile on his face, I quickly turned and sat back down. Why was Kaleb here, he was not the type of person to take a thirty-minute drive from his house at night to come to a place like this to eat a burger, so there was no way I was leaving now, this was too suspicious. "Brandon, hey", I heard his voice and snapped my head towards that directed, Kaleb was fist bumping the large built man who was in all black and shades at the entrance of the flight of stairs that led to the second floor. The man did not respond, but they did let Kaleb pass through the purple velvet rope that swung across the entrance of the stairs.
My sister apparently was also watching Kaleb as he climbed the spiral stairs. She then looked at her watch and then to the entrance from the kitchen and walked back to that entrance. Not too long after she came back out in a completely different outfit, that I must say was risqué, with loads of make up on. She too walked up to the large man at the entrance of the stairs and he looked down at her form his tall frame as she cleared her throat, "Brandon", he says in a monotone voice, "Miss Banks", he repeated in the same tone as he unhinged the purple rope form its hinge. "Ms. Banks huh", I thought to myself, looks like her obsession with The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was still there. "Crap!", I whispered to myself, how was I supposed to get up there with tall dark and intimidated always on look out, he must want to use the bathroom at some point. Time passed and the solid frame of a man dressed in black did not move from his post, they must be paying him good if he was this dedicated. I looked at my watch, it was going to half eleven and I got nothing.
I sighed in defeat, as I got up from my boot, this night did not really go as I had planned, but at least I did figure out something shady had to be happening on the second level of 'Friskys' for Kaleb Anderson to come , because wherever he went trouble followed, and there was no doubt about that. I made my way to the register and paid my bill. "Tonight was a really entertaining night Brandon, one day I hope to see you up there", Kaleb slurred to the tall man and hit his broad chest with the palm of his hands, Kaleb took a hundred dollar bill from his wallet and slipped it to Brandon , and he smiled and so did Brandon, who I thought was not trained to do nothing but remove and put the velvet rope from and on its hinges. "Jess?", Kaleb turned in my direction and squinted his eyes trying to get a better view. "Fuck!", I cursed as I pulled the cap lower in front of my face and I made a quick turn to the exit, and he started following me outside. "Jess, baby, why are you running?", he slurred and tried to walk in a straight line towards me, luckily, he was drunk enough that he could not catch up to me. I sped up and quickly opened the car door.
I put the keys in the ignition, and by the time I looked up Kaleb, with a loud thud plastered himself on the hood of the car, and I quickly looked back down. "Oh, I get it, you want to play peek-a-boo", he said to me giggling a bit, I did not have the time for this. I blew the car hoping that it would be enough for him to fall flat on his butt and I could get away, and thankfully that did work. I looked back in the review mirror as I drove away to see Kaleb's face, he was in pain as he tried to stand up, dusting off his pants. Again, I let out a sigh and drove home. I parked the car in the same spot as before and ran inside. Tonight, was eventful, but I still had lots to figure out. I kicked off my shoes, peeled off my socks, and lifted the sweatshirt over my head to take it off, and plopped straight on my bed, it sure was an eventful night because before I knew it, my eyelids became heavy and I started to fall asleep, not even having enough time to think about what happened tonight in full detail.
