Chapter Fourteen:
Look Alive Sunshine
We drove for awhile, about an hour before reaching a small gas station type of place. We got out of the car, half in the costumes that fit us.
"It's so, dusty in here," Frank wiped hand along a table, and dust stuck to it, clouding up the stagnant air when he moved.
"I can tell no one has been here in awhile," I coughed from the dust.
I heard something move behind the counter, and my hands instantly reached for the holster on my side. Frank had pulled his gun and was steadily aiming at the counter.
Why, why do we know how to do this?
Do these wierd mind games really matter right now, Gerard?
Right. Person behind the counter. I'll take left, you take right.
Slowly we inched behind the counter, to find no one there.
Frank piped up again, maybe the cupboards?
I checked a few. In the second was a few cans of beans. In the forth was a tiny, huddling figure. Their hair bounced like Ray's with every sob.
"H-hey, little one?" I reached out my hands and set it on their shoulder.
They jerked a little and gave a small shriek.
A little girl? Alone in this crazy place?
I don't know Gerard, this is all one weird occurrence of Deja vu after another.
I helped the little girl out, "We don't know what's going on. We just got here. Can you help us?"
"You can't ever die in this place, did you know that?"
"What?" I gave Frank a confused glance and he shrugged.
"That's why they have those guns," she pointed to the yellow one in my holster, "guns like those. Are you with them? I guess there's not much I can do to fight back now."
"With who? What's going on, little girl?"
"The bad guys. The ones with the scary faces and crazy hair? Yeah."
"What about them?"
"They're bad. They hate it if you draw outside the lines. I did that once, but I got out before they could change me."
"Change you..?"
"I'm not like the other children they create. I'm a glitch in their system."
"How? How old are you?"
"Every system messes up sometimes. I don't know my age. I just woke up one day, out of a fog, and in front of a coloring book I hated."
"Well, do you want to travel with us? We need someone who knows what's going on, and we can't just leave you here."
She hesitated for a moment, and the reached out her hand to be helped up, "Alright. I'll go."
A radio cracked behind us, "Oh! Shhh! Both of you boys be quiet! Dr D is on!!"
"Who?"
"Shhh!!!"
Look alive, Sunshine
109 in the sky but the pigs won't quit
You're here with me: Dr. Death Defying
I'll be your surgeon, your proctor, your helicopter
Pumpin' out the slaughtermatic sounds to keep you alive
A system failure for the masses, antimatter for the master plan
Louder than God's revolver and twice as shinyThis one's for all of you rock'n'rollers
All you crash queens and motor babiesListen up!
The future is bulletproof!
The aftermath is secondary!
It's time to do it now and do it loud!
Killjoys, make some noise! She clicked off the radio. I gave Frank a confused look, and he finally piped up.
"Killjoys?"
"People like us," she turned off the radio static, "People who don't fit into their master, cookie cutter plan."
"Huh," Frank looked to me, "You make a cute Killjoy."
"Not now, Frankie. We need a plan," both of them ignored me.
"Frankie? That's a boring name," she picked up the rest of his costume, "from now on I'm calling you Fun Ghoul."
"Fun Ghoul? Whatever you say, little girl."
