Chapter Five:

Fake Your Death

Eventually feeling spread back into my body, and I sat up. My hospital room had white walls and scuffed up tile floors; each square foot looking a darker grey than it's original shade. To my right was the source of the beeping- my heart rate and blood pressure monitors. I watched the EKG line bump up and down on the screen. After it reached a couple peaks, the door slid open. The nurse from earlier, the one who had stuck the IV needle in my arm, came in holding a pen and clipboard.

"Hello Gerard, I think we got off on the wrong foot. I'm sorry about the whole needle thing, but I had to keep you under so you could heal."

"It's, it's fine. I guess." I poked my fingers together and Eloise sighed.

"Gerard, your brother Mikey, he has decided to put you into the psych ward." She looked me in the eyes, and was waiting for my reaction.

"Wait, you're the psych ward kid!"

Frank was in the ward. My Frank. Why he is there doesn't matter right now. All that does matter is I'm about to be with him on an almost constant basis.

I started shaking my head yes at the nurse, "Yeah, yeah. Okay. I understand. Let's go." I jumped down from the hospital bed and turned my head while Eloise took the needle out of my arm and the heart rate monitor off my finger. She led me down a few hallways and we stopped before a large plated glass door; little criss crosses of metal between the two panes. "Psychiatric Ward" was printed in bold white-metal letters above the door. A slightly plump officer officer sat behind a half door next to the larger ones that led to the inside to the ward.

"Name?" Her voice was thick I could tell she didn't want to be watching after crazy people all day. I'll call her Officer Grump.

Eloise showed the officer her card, "And this kid here is Gerard Way. He starts in the ward today and so far only has sixth months."

Officer Grump pushed a button on her control panel. One of the large metal doors clicked, and my nurse pushed it open. Inside was a small room with three doors. One opened to where Grump sat. Another opened to a little office that had a half window and counter to the room we were in. And the final door was made of plexiglass, and I could see a few patients milling about- none of which I made out to be Frank.

Again the nurse introduced me. The lady behind the counter was nice, and she looked very young to be stuck working with these kind of people. I caught a glimpse at her tag, and found out her name was Julie. Eloise waved goodbye and wished me good luck as she went back to her regular shift.

"So Gerard," Julie said, "Are you ready to go meet some new people?"

Yeah right, lady.

I shook my head yes. She smiled and open the door to the commons room in the ward. The four people in there looked up at me. None of them sparked my interests, so I ignored them and followed Julie to my room.

"Okay Gerard, this is your room for the next couple months. I hope you don't mind, but you have a roommate. I'm not sure where he is right now, but you'll meet him eventually. I can't quite remember his name right now either. Sorry dear." Julie stopped at my door and pointed to the bed on the right side of the room, "That's your bed. Dinner should be ready soon, so just fix up your stuff and come out to the commons area. I'll see you out there Gerard." She smiled once more without teeth, and then left me alone.

I set my bag with the clothes Mikey had brought for me the other day in my drawer, and turned to look out the window. The panes were covered in a thin film of dust and dirt, so I wiped it away with my shirt sleeve. Out the window, I could only see a few rolling hills. On top of the farthest one, was a tall, white tower. It glimmered in the afternoon sun, and my hands itched for something to draw or paint it with. The sunset hues of the sky were at the perfect color for painting, and the building had a few odd angles I would have loved to sketch.
