"What did you tell Asher's parents about us?" I tried my best to keep my voice calm as I spoke on the phone with my mom.

"I don't know what you're talking about Charlie. Stop being silly." My mom spat back…but I knew. Spitting back had always been her way of covering up.

"I'm not being silly and you know it. You told Asher's parents that Asher and I were sweet on each other. There's no other way they could have come up with that conclusion on their own. At least not after witnessing our first meeting and attending the wedding." There was a pause and I heard her breathe in.

"There's no harm there, it was for the best."

"Why would you do something like that?" I raised my voice a tad bit higher.

"Don't yell at me young lady." She said, ignoring my question.

"I want an answer to my question." I insisted.

"Okay, yes. I may have given them that impression...but what is the problem? Why are you so worked up about it? You're married, you're supposed to be in love. What would you do if the media found out otherwise? You should even be grateful because I did you a favour. It's all about what's best for you Charlie." She reeled and I looked up at the ceiling trying to contain my anger.

"Who decides what's best? You or me? Becuase it seems I don't have a say at all. I may still be the youngest but I'm married now and that means you don't have a say over my life anymore. You may have even arranged the marriage, but as long as I don't answer your surname anymore, you can't just step into my life and do whatever you want." My fist was clenched on my bed spread.

"Come off all this Charlie and be real. It's getting too much. It seems like anytime we talk nowadays, we always fight…it's coming between us."

"You drove the wedge between us yourself that day when you brought that ring into my room. You made me know who's side you were on and it wasn't mine! From now on, I don't want you in my life…you've caused enough damage already. Don't call me again, and don't attempt to communicate with me except in public gatherings and only if you have to. If you need to pass across any information to us, you can do it through Asher. If you try to call, I won't pick up and if you show up, I'll find someplace else to be. I want to be free of you mummy. Bye." I didn't even wait for her reply before I ended the call.

Frustrated, I flung my phone on the bed and flopped into my pillows kneading my forehead.

My phone began to vibrate where I dropped it and my ring tone began playing. When I saw it was my mom, I declined it. I then went over to my call settings and blocked her number.

"She thinks she can run my life." I hissed

My canvas was across the room at a hidden corner still covered in a linen cloth.
As I said before, I didn't want anybody stumbling on it mistakenly. Once I felt confident enough, I would hang it up.

As I held my phone, a notification hung down and I saw it was a new message from WhatsApp…Mrs. Okafor.

I'm going shopping at Lekki Shop rite. Would you like to come with?

I thought of it and shrugged. I'm basically not doing anything…as always. And secretly, I wanted to see her again.
Our talk the last time got me thinking about so many things and started making me question so many things too. I couldn't wait to talk with her again actually.
