The Kit's Story

Chapter 8

                     Foxtrot erupted from the nursery, eyes widening in horror as she saw the spot where Chirpkit was buried, and raced over and uncovered a tuft of Golden fur. Foxtrot pulled up up and dropped Chirpkit on the ground, gasping for precious air. Calikit remembered when she had nearly drowned, and there had been water in her lungs, blocking the air. Foxtrot hurried outside. "Chirpkit!" She wailed, racing to her dying kit. " Where is Tansytail?" "Out collecting herbs." Acornpelt sneered. " Look's like poor little Chirpkit is a goner. "No she isn't!" Calikit yowled, suddenly remembering how Tansytail had saved her. " I can save Chirpkit!" Calikit gathered her strength and jumped onto Chirpkit's chest. Snow and water erupted from her mouth, and she gasped for air. A  tabby she-cat entered camp, a squirrel dangling from her jaws. " Twistedsong!" Foxtrot called. "Find Tansytail! I need her now!" Twistedsong dropped her squirrel in shock at the sight of Chirpkit. She raced out the camp. Foxtrot turned to Oceankit. "Go ask your mom to take Chirpkit to the medicine den." Oceankit nodded, eyes wide, and scurried away to the nursery. "You two, go with her. Get warmed up." She told her remaining kits. Stormkit and Calikit slumped back to the nursery as Hearttuft burst out of the nursery, bringing Chirpkit to the medicine den. Calikit peeked out of the nursery. Foxtrot was snarling at Acornpelt. "  I thought you had the slightest bit of caring to save a kit from death!" She hissed. Acornpelt laughed, insanity glittering in his eyes. " She deserved it." He giggled. " You deserve that, they deserve that! You all betrayed me! You wouldn't give them away to make my StormClan mother happy! We had an agreement! I can go with you, I give her our kits!" Foxtrot gasped. An eerie silence settled between the two. " You didn't have to listen to her." Foxtrot finally whispered. "My mother hates me." He retorted. " Because of you." Before Foxtrot could say anything, Tansytail ran in. "Twistedsong told me everything." She panted. "Where is Chirpkit?" Foxtrot shot a sorrowful glance at Acornpelt, then lead Tansytail to Chirpkit. Suddenly Acornpelts' gaze landed on Calikit, and she quickly jumped into her nest. Is that why dad hates me? Because my birth made his mother hates me? Calikit thought as she drifted into sleep.
