The Kit's Story

Chapter 12

" I'm clean! Cleaner than clean! In fact, im CLEANEST!" Shallowkit protested as Hearttuft washed her fur. "Hardly!" Hearttuft scoffed. " I see a smudge of dirt!" She dove onto him, scowling at the faintest spot of dirt. Calikit giggled. Today, Shallowkit and Oceankit become apprentices. It has been a moon since Chirpkit's death and her family had found ways to keep going. Calikit was 3 moons old now, as old as Oceankit when she was born. Oceankit padded over, her fur shining. Hearttuft refused to let them leave to be apprentices until they were squeaky clean, and Oceankit had not the slightest bit of dirt on her. Calikit felt a pang of sadness. Oceankit and Shallowkit would leave the nursery and go to the apprentice den. Calikit didn't care that Shallowkit left, but she would miss Oceankit, and Calikit could tell by the look on Stormkit's face that he was sad as well. " May all old enough to catch their own prey meet beneath the Bigrock." "It's time!" Oceankit squealed, scammering out. Shallowkit moved, but Hearttuft wouldn't let him go. "I'm not finished! Look at that huge spot of mud!" "Moooom. let me go! We can't make Tawnystar wait!" Shallowkit bounded outside. Hearttuft sighed and shot a resentful glance at Foxtrot. " They look fine." Foxtrot reassured her. Hearttuft rushed outside after her kits. " I want to see!" Calikit cried. " Sorry kits,but it is for cats that can catch prey." Frecklekit sneered, padding outside. Calikit sighed. She always acted like she was in charge. "Hey, your a kit to!" Stormkit protested. " I know how to catch prey." She snarled. "No, you don't." Bowflare told Frecklekit. "You will stay right here." Frecklekit frowned. Calikit pressed her ear firmly against the nursery wall. She heard a muffled female mew, then cheering. Calikit sighed in frusteration. She couldn't hear a thing!!!!!!! " You may as well give up." Foxtrot's voice told her. "Fine." Calikit mumbled, padding to her nest. Slumping down, she listened to the cheers outside, and dreamed about the one day SHE would be cheering, for her kits. " Fernkit, Calikit's most wonderful kit ever, you can skip apprenticeship and become a warrior right away because your mother is so awesome......" Her thoughts made her happy, and she fell alseep, realizing that Chirpkit was there, cheering for her kit the loudest.
