Calikit waked up, and a moment later she realized Foxtrot was not in her nest. " Foxtrot?" She called. There was no reply. "Where is she?" Calikit whimpered. Just then, the braken entrance to the nursery bristled, and Foxtrot came in, a mouse dangling from her jaws. Calikit scrampled up to her. " Where were you? " She demanded. " At the fresh-kill pile." She drops her mouse, then added, " It is about time you kits ate fresh-kill." Calikit wrinkled her nose at the smell of the mouse. "No!!!!" She wailed. "I want milk!!!!" Calikits' cries woke Chirpkit and Stormkit. "What is going on?" Chirpkit asked sleepily. "Mommy's making us eat mice!" Calikit exclaimed. Stormkit bounced up, suddenly wide awake. " We won't eat crowfood!!!" He mewed in despair, eyeing the mouse in disgust. Foxtrot sighed. "Oh well. But Shallowkit eats mice, voles, even squirells. I thought you did not want him to be better than you, but whatever. I don't care." " What I mean is, give me that mouse!" Calikit mewed, pouncing on the mouse. She took a huge bite, while Chirpkit and Stormkit ate the other sides. It's not THAT bad. Calikit thought. Actually, it is quite nice. It had a stringy taste, and its flesh tasted fresh on her tongue. Calikit realized how hungry she was as she swallowed the bite, and devoured her share in a few famished bites. " I am just as good as Shallowkit!" She declared as she swallowed the last of her share. A black kit with a white chest wobbled up, and Calikit  realized it was Nightkit, the newborn kit in Bowflares' litter. Nightkit cocked his head to one side, staring at the remains of the mouse. " What is that?" He squeaked. Bowflare angirly came over, looming over Nightkit. "You need to stay in your nest!!!" She demanded, but Nightkit wasn't paying attention. "Is it true, what Shallowkit said, that your daddy hates you??? Shallowkit said he wasn't surprised he did. He also said you are as good as a mouse-tail. Is it all true?" Nightkit asked. Bowflare let out a shocked gasp. "Don't you listen to all that nonsense Shallowkit tells you!!! Calikit is a fine young kit." Picking up her kit by the scruff, she added "Sorry, Calikit. There is nothing wrong with you. Your dad is the furball." And with that Bowflare returned to the rest of her hungry litter. Calikit padded back to her nest and curled up, despite her siblings begging to play moss-ball and her mothers' pleads to get up and play. She lay there all day, anger bubbling up inside of her at the thought of Acornpelt and Shallowkit. Shallowkit, you made your move. She thought. I have two enemies now.
