It had almost been four years since the day Azuki was born. And his parents grew in anticipation as every day brought them closer and closer to whenever his quirk would activate. They just desperately wish they knew when. Azuki was a beautiful boy, with longish maroon hair coming down around his ears. He loved to laugh and play and cause messes. He would play hide and seek with his mother and play hero and villain with his father. Azuki would wobble towards his dad and punch him, in which his dad would pretend to be blown back in Azuki's magnificent power. These moments Azuki's parents cherished. Then it happened, Azuki got sick. It was nothing serious, just a bad cough and snotty nose that prevented him from being the playful sprite he was. His parents worried nonetheless.
"It's been almost four years and nothing has shown with Azuki" said his Father optimistically. "We shouldn't worry so much, his quirk could be something has harmless as being an adorable kid".
His wife nodded, her face still creased with a worried expression. "It's just that he's sick and it's almost been four years an-" her husband cut her off "Children get sick, it's very normal, I mean I think it goes to show how healthy Azuki is because he hasn't really gotten sick until now." His spouse nodded, still nervous slightly. "Remember what we promised each other we would do? We would love him and support him no matter what, even if the world turns their backs on him?" her husband finished, wanting to help ease his beloveds mind as much as possible. She nodded and put her arms out hug him. It was at this moment that Azuki walked into the room. His parents were surprised to say the least. "Azuki, your sick remember, you need your rest" said his dad as he went to scoop him up "come on, back to bed" he said bending over .His arms passed right through him and out of reflex he kept on walking, thinking his son was in his arms before realizing what had happened. He turned around, eyes wide with shock. His mother, still rooted in the same spot put a hand over her mouth to muffle a gasp. Azuki was different. The maroon aura around him was more profound, and his eyes gleamed in a fashion, like there was a bright light reflecting off them. His body shimmered and rippled, like a pond that had a pebble dropped in it.
"But daaaaaaaad, I'm not sick anymore, seeeee? I can talk normal now and my nose isn't a faucet anymore" Azuki said after he giggled, he liked comparing his nose to a faucet. His father turned around and knelt, still in shock and gently lowered his hand to touch Azuki's head. It passed right through. Azuki was even confused this time as he was expecting a pat on his head from his dad. His mother started tearing up and shaking uncontrollably as her husband repeated the process over and over again, changing the spots on Azuki's body that he touched to see if anything, ANYTHING was physical. "Daddy what's going on?" asked Azuki being ever so confused, as his fathers hands would pass through him again and again. While it was fun at first, he didn't feel any of it and he always liked when his dad tickled him. His father hung his head and Azuki could see tears falling down his face. Azuki gasped in amazement, he had never seen his father cry, he was to strong and cool to do that. "Don't cry Dad!" exclaimed Azuki and he went to hug his dad, that always cheered him up when he was feeling low. Azuki's arms went right through him and his father cried harder. Azuki started to panic and he turned to his mother, who was weeping at this point.
"Mooom, Daaad, what's going on? Why are you both crying? Why can't I touch you?" Azuki asked, not understanding the weight of the situation.
His father got up and wiped the tears from his eyes.
"Honey, call the hospital, have them send Doctor Gu over, tell them to hurry, it's urgent" he choked off the last part, as it was all he could do to not cry again. His wife nodded and took her phone and went to the next room over and dialed up the hospital's number.
"Azuki, I need you to do something for me, I need you to try touching this wall" said his father pointing to the nearest wall, desperate for something to work. "Well of course I can do that dad, just watch me!" Azuki said proudly, knowing that he had touched the walls of his house many many times before. He rushed over to the wall and went to slap it as hard as he could, just to show how much he could prove his dad wrong. Azuki wound up his arm and let it loose and instead of making a loud thwap noise, his hand went right through the wall and he stared at the sight of his arm almost halfway in the wall in utter disbelief. There was no stinging pain that would have accompanied such a slap, there was nothing.
Azuki stood there forever it seemed, it dawning on his young mind what was happening. The Doctor arrived to the Sheishin's house as fast as he could, he burst through the door to see a most sorry sight. Both the Sheishin's and their boy Azuki were huddled together on the floor. Both Parents were trying to hug Azuki but it seemed like he was ethereal in a way, they passed right through him. Azuki had half of his arm in the wall, like his whole arm just stopped at the point in which it made contact with the solid surface. The parents both turned to him as he entered, anguish all over their faces. Jola Sheishin, the boys father got up hurriedly and rushed to the doctor while Yoka Sheishin, the boys mother stayed by Azuki's side. "Doctor, what's going on with our boy, how can we fix this?!" Jola all but yelled, panic soaking his voice, breaking Azuki out of his trance like state. Azuki with his arm still in the wall turned to his father and the doctor. Doctor Gu adjusted his glasses and knelt down to the boy, doing the same test that Azuki's father had done before, touching places all over his body to see if anything was physical. Alas, nothing was. "Tell me Azuki, can you see anything?" The doctor asked, racking his brain for what could possibly be happening. "U-um, yes I can see you, and Momma and Daddy and the house and-" Doctor Gu cut him off, gently "That's very good Azuki, now, can you breathe?" Azuki eyebrows knit together in confusion. Of course he could breathe Azuki thought, doesn't the doctor know everyone can breathe? "Of course I can!" Exclaimed Azuki and he took a deep breath. While doing this the doctor held his hand slightly aways from the Boy's mouth. The doctor felt no air, no oxygen had been inhaled. Doctor Gu nodded and got up and walked to Jola. Quietly he explained that "Azuki's quirk doesn't seem to be permeation, if you permeate your whole body like Azuki is, you can't see or breathe, but he can see but not breathe. This has been happening for about an hour today hasn't it?" Jola gave a quiet defeated "yes". Gu nodded gravely. "Well that's good at least, if permeation was his quirk and he was holding it like that for this long he would have died" Gu tried to say, discreetly as not to get Yoka worried. Jola looked over his shoulder to see his wife still trying to hold their son while Azuki would take a giant breathe in, and then breathe it out. He was showing her that he could hold his breath for much much longer now. Yoka sat there and stared at Azuki in disbelief, how could this be happening to her baby?
"Well what can we do then Doctor? I mean if he doesn't get back to normal, how will he eat? How will he drink? He can't survive without those things, I can't lose him-I ca-" Gu held up his hand. He could tell Jola was getting hysterical, and he couldn't have that because then Yoka would get even more hysterical and Azuki's quirk might change or worsen. He couldn't let that happen. "Jola, I know that the situation seems bad but collect yourself, if you get too hysterical it will make your family even worse and Azuki's condition could worsen." Jola looked at the Doctor like he wanted to scream or shout or say something but he just nodded solemnly.
"Now this is just speculation, but I don't think Azuki needs water or food anymore. The kid's body doesn't even take breathes anymore. If he needed sustenance his body would definitely require oxygen, which it doesn't. I don't think his body would shut off like that, it would be practically killing itself. Quirks are evolutions in a way, and evolutions push forward, not backwards, if that makes sense" The Doctor said, pushing up his glasses. Jola nodded, he understood. He did one of the hardest things he's ever done, he smiled. He smiled not because he was happy, not because something good happened but he smiled because that's what his family needed to see. Before he turned around to face them he asked the Doctor "Do you think he'll ever be able to turn it off?" The Doctor grimly replied "I don't know. I shall have a team of doctors come here, I don't know if Azuki would be able to ride in a car. Also with something like this, it might be better explained to him in the comforts of his own home" Jola nodded and bowed to Gu who quickly exclaimed that he was doing his job and didn't need to be thanked. "Thank you anyways, you gave us hope" Jola said and turned around to his family. They had a lot of work to do, but they would do it together.
