The bell rang, signaling it was time for lunch. Azuki finished taking his notes before putting them away.
"Now remember class, just because we have received the answers from the schools you applied to, does not mean that you are all off the hook. There are a couple of school weeks left, so give it your all still" Teacher explained while everyone got ready to go to lunch, except Mazi that is.Azuki kicked Mazi's desk making his friend jostle awake. If Azuki didn't do this almost everyday, it would be hard to tell that he even was asleep. Mazi's body was hunched just slightly, his hands were still on his desk, a pencil in his hand.
To anyone else it would look like he was paying attention, but Azuki could see. Mazi's breathing gave it away, it was that of someone deep in slumber.
"Wuhh hum ana" Mazi blurted out, looking around at the classroom.
"Come on Mazi, it's time for lunch" Azuki said exasperated. He gathered around Mazi's stuff and put it away, while Mazi stretched and groaned. The students were leaving at this point, but Azuki knew they could take their time, no one was going to take their spots.
"I'm learning so much it's crazy" Mazi said, the sarcasm dripping from his voice. He got up from his chair and started heading to the lunch room. Azuki stood there for a moment, bewildered.
After almost three years of having met Mazi, Azuki felt like sometimes he hardly knew him. Azuki ran after him, not wanting to be alone in the classroom with Teacher.
At the lunch table, Azuki and Mazi took their respective seats, the only two at the table in fact. What will we talk about today? Azuki wondered.
Mount Lady got a new costume, Mazi will probably bring that up, or his opinion on why Hawks is too overhyped, it always some weird subject with Mazi but Azuki had come to accept it and enjoy it even. Their lunch table conversations were the best part of the day.
"So do you think you'll be accepted into UA's Hero course?" Mazi asked, snapping Azuki out of his thoughts.
Azuki stared at Mazi in surprise, he hadn't told Mazi he was applying for UA, how did he know? Azuki thought in utter shock.
"You fry a circuit or something? Your answering processor down?" Mazi said, the impatience in his voice. That surprised Azuki even more, Mazi hardly displayed impatience, he was the type of person who would just go with the flow.
"First of all, no my answering processor is still up and running, thank you for asking" Azuki said amusingly. "What about you flower head? Did you get enough water and sunlight to make sure your hair doesn't wilt?"
Azuki paused waiting for Mazi's comeback. Over the years Azuki had realized if he met Mazi's jabs with his own, it would turn into a friendly battle of who could make the better comeback and it was enjoyable.
Luckily for Azuki, recently a pink flower had grown on Mazi's head, like it was hair or something, giving Azuki something to poke fun at him for.
However, Mazi just shrugged and replied with "You didn't answer my question Azuki" in his trademark monotone voice.
Azuki sat upright, something must have happened with Mazi, or Mazi was actually concerned about something for once, because he almost never called Azuki by his real name. "Is everything alright Mazi? You seem-" Azuki was cut off by Mazi, who after folding his arms and kicking his feet on the table said "Come on, just spit it out please".
Azuki froze, today was not going like he would have thought whatsoever.
"Y-yes, I applied to UA, how'd you know?" Azuki said sheepishly.
