A

va and William left the piano and approached the door that was opening.
It revealed a small space inside the pilaster.

- What’s… this? - asked William, suspiciously smelling it.
- There’s something inside! - said the princess.

William used mouth to pick the mysterious object out, then put it on a coffee table near them.

It was a wooden box, built with oak bark. Under the thin layer of dust on its surface, the animals could notice some minuscule green stones. It had bronze hinges and the lid was blocked with a lock.

- My father hid something for us! - exclaimed Ava - Do you understand?! Only Eva and I could know the combination for opening the hiding place, because it was the songs he created for us! No one else could know it. And it was possible only with two people, so  we could do it…. together. - a dark shadow ran through her eyes.

- This can be opened only with a key. - commented William, trying to change the topic and putting her attention on the lock.
- Oh. Maybe… - Ava touched Komorebi’s necklace, around her neck. The precious key was swinging under the Ocean of Friendship - ...this one?
- We can try!

Princess Ava used claws to push the key into the keyhole of the box. It perfectly entered, a sign they were built for each other.
She turned it.
The lock clicked and the lid raised.

- Look!
- It worked!
- What’s inside?

In the button of the box, a series of papers was tied with a string. Ava took it away and picked them up.
- They’re letters!
- Is there any envelopes? We may read the receiver and the sender, even though I’m sure they belonged to my father.
- it doesn’t look so…

Sadly, in the box there were only the papers filled with words and ink, black on white, but nothing that may indicate the other person that King Edward may have written with.

Not believing about what was happening, Ava raised the first paper, in order to let William see as well,  and began reading it.

Dear ////////

-The name is deleted with ink! - noticed Ava, nervous.
-This is from the King, right? he was really determined to not let us know who was writing to. Please, keep reading!

I hope the little one is fine.
I was having a walk in the woods last night, and I heard her crying. Does she have a stomach ache? Ava and Eva have the same problem, here.
Her voice was so thin and pure. She’s very small, isn’t she?
Don’t worry, I didn’t rest there for long. I know what you think about it.
But please, please, let me meet my sweet one. Only one time. I promise, I won’t annoy you. I just need to see her.  I need to see how she looks, I want to hear her meowing, I want to hug and lick her and I want to tell her how much I love her.
Her missing is killing me.
You can’t understand how pain you’re causing me.
I won’t stop paying you, I can keep the promise.

Edward,
The baby is fine, you don’t need to come. You know what? Don’t come anymore, or else!
Stop asking it, my choice won’t change. You won’t see your daughter. I don’t care if you suffer or not, I’m not gonna lose my richness with that kitty.
Don’t you think I know what you’re going to do? You’ll come with one of your Guards and you’ll bring her away with my money. Do you think I’m that stupid?
Stay away from me, it’s better for you both.
Also, if you want me to keep her and your little secret, don’t stop paying me.
Otherwise, I won’t wait a single day before closing her in a basket and leaving her on your mother’s door. What do you think she will do with her?
Don’t hope for stopping me, you won’t save her in any other way.
I wait for the gold.
Bye.
