The soil of his shoes made the old parquet creak, which was one of the only sounds in the Mansion.
The boney arms were crossed on his chest, covered by the sleeves of the wood jacket he was wearing. It was dirty of blood, canine blood that painted a creepy abstract painting about pain and wounds.
One hand was still holding the gun, whose black metal refused to reflect light and at the same time ate all the darkness of the room.Steel Wool and Kayl were standing some meters away, along the wall of the laboratory, not daring to make a single noise.
The pieces of flasks and glass objects were scattered on the floor like dead butterflies, the last signs of the fight happened there. Huge puddles of blood were everywhere like in a minefield, making crossing the room without stepping on them almost impossible.
The human appeared to not care about them, so he just let his foot get dirt of red and then filled his way with the weird prints of the footwears.Titan was lying near the door, slowly whining and crying.
He was calmer down, but now he was just acting as an injured and scared beast, unable to move from his place. He kept his paws on his now blind eyes, from the ones blood was dripping like tears. His sides moved up and down fastly and irregularly, often shaken by coughs.
No one had checked out yet, but there was no doubt his sight was gone forever. It wasn’t just it: he had several lacerations all over his body, due to the savage fight he had with William. The Golden Retriever didn't spare any attack and, despite the disadvantage, he hurted the enemy enough to knock him out.Kayl was staring at him with a totally indifferent expression, totally untouched by his fellow’s pain. His eyes observed the blood with a weird light, just like it was the only really interesting thing in the whole room.
Unlike him, Steel Wool was totally in shock: he moved his look from the Bernese to the human, which was the only movement he was able to do. He was like paralyzed, barely able to breath and even unable to cry. Never, in his life, he had seen so much blood and violence. It was enough to take the imperturbable and strict ram in a state of trauma.
- Now tell me - began the Petbuster. He turned to the two healthy animals and made a long step toward them, raising one arm in a threatening action - WHY HAD THEM RUN AWAY?!
- I looked for them in the whole countryside! - whined Kayl, all sudden scared - They disappeared!
- Disappeared?! - thundered the man - How did they disappear?! What kind of brainless beast lost the traces of an injured dog and a cat?!
- I… I don’t know. - he whispered - I think they jumped in the river.- So they’re dead?! Are you saying this?! - the Petbuster raised the mace and hit the shelves with all his strength. The old wood broke down under his violence and the few flasks exploded in hundreds of pieces.
Steel Wool winced, Kayl protected his snout with one paw.
- Maybe the dog, but the princess…
- Could the Feles Aulicus be alive?! - questioned the human, furious.
Steel Wool nodded, in fear. No, he couldn’t bet it, but he was too terrified to do anything else. This seemed to calm the man a bit.
He made a few steps to the table, observing its polished and precious surface and the small cat-sized objects on it.
He rested like that, thoughtful, for a long moment, then nodded.
- Good. If the Feles Aulicus is alive, I still can get her. Now she’s alone and scared, maybe injured, so most probably she’s going to the Castle. We’ll be waiting for her.- We’re going to the Castle? - repeated Kayl.
- Yes. I have a plan, but I won’t tolerate another failure from you. Or else… - he raised the gun, making sure they could see it.
Steel Wool nodded, trembling. The Petbuster slowly turned to him, looking straight into his green eyes with his icing ones.
He approached the huge sheep without hesitation, arriving only a few centimeters from his snout, then put the mace against the wall.
- Maybe I misunderstood, ram. - whispered - ...but I believed to were ABLE TO WATCH OVER YOUR STUPID TRAINEES!Steel Wool got smaller, terrified.
- I a-a-am… - he staggered - I j-j-just… Wi-William is..was… he’s a good f-fighter!- The pact was clear! - screamed the human - You had to keep them under control and help me to take the Feles Aulicus and their diamonds, then I was going to spare your lives! Otherwise, I won’t spare no one!
- I-I-I know! - the ram insisted, shaking like a leaf - I… I will do better! W-William j-just got us off guard! I didn’t think he.. he still could… fight back!
- You should know how to fight someone you trained yourself! I thought you were better, but I hadn’t just got attacked by the Golden Retriever, but also by your stupid Bernese! - the human let the mace fall. It fell next to Steel Wool’s hooves, who made a jump for fear.
The Petbuster used both hands to touch the gun… and take the safe off. He kneed down, to get the sheep’s same height and look at him in the face. He made a creepy, insane evil smile.
- You’d better do a better job with the other Guards, especially with that Mastiff, or I’ll do what I had to do with your dear William. - he whispered.Steel Wool nodded, trembling.
- Good. I promised you to spare them as long as they could be helpful to achieve my goal, but I won’t hesitate to blow their brains off if you’ll put me in the conditions of doing it. Alright?
- Alright.He stood up.
Steel Wool was finally able to breathe. For relief, he slipped against the wall and fell down on a sitting position.
Kayl looked at his master with an amused face: he didn’t expect him to be that much of a coward. The scene seemed just pathetic to his eyes, nothing more.
The Petbuster overpassed Titan without giving him a single look, then opened the broken door with a kick and exited the room.
It was the moment when Steel Wool decided to risk and ask for it.
- He-hey, wait!The human stopped.
- C-can you do a-anything to help Titan? - unsurely questioned the ram - He-he-he’s wounded…
The Petbuster turned to him and raised his eyebrows.
Then, he smiled.
- Aww, you’re still caring about your trainees? - giggled - How cute. Yes, I can do something for him.
- Thank you… - nodded Steel Wool.
For a moment he almost got surprised by the affirmative answer, so he happily observed the human approaching Titan again…...but when he took off the safe again he understood.
- No, wait, NO!
It was too late.
A thunder sounded all over the mansion.
Titan made a loud whine and then stopped moving.
Kayl did his best to not start laughing, amused by that cruel act.
Steel Wool fell down on the floor, feeling like the bullet hit him.
His eyes filled with tears, but he couldn’t make a single noise.- You’ve already killed two of your apprentices. - mumbled the human - How many ones will you let die?
Then, he walked off.Kayl stood up and followed him, stepping in as much blood as he could and stopping just to observe the other dog’s dead body.
Steel Wool rested alone.
He closed his eyes, unable to see that view for one more second. He still heard the bang into his ears, his head was about to explode.
He started crying.
He promised to himself that now he wouldn’t have allowed himself to make one more mistake.
