After leaving the beach and dropping Alisa off Daniel, Chris and I headed to rent a movie. Chris waited in the Jeep.

“We said something funny.” Daniel looked at me questioningly as I scanned the shelves for something to watch.

“Or not, I don’t really mind. I could watch anything, not that I think I would be able to keep my eyes open. The beach was really exhausting.” I scanned the next shelve and removed a movie from its space. “I choose this one.”

“You know this is a horror movie right?” He looked at me as if I was mad.

“Yes, is that a problem?”

“You hate scary movies.” He moved to place it back.

“No! I want to watch it. In any way, you would be there to protect me.” I walked towards the gum ball machine, placed the coin in the slot and the paper packet filled with gum balls.

Daniel hugged me from behind and the heat traveled over my skin. “Mmmm, I will save you any day.” He took a random movie out of the shelve and pulled me towards the counter. After he paid we got in the jeep and went to their house.

“Hi Mrs. W.” I looked her over from head to toe. She wore blue overalls that were covered in red paint. “You still painting that mural?”

“Hallo kid. Yes it is almost done. It would soon be ready for the big reveal. How was your day at the beach?” She was busy washing a few dishes. She was a beautiful woman with dark brown hair. I knew where the boys got their looks from. She was an artist, a very successful one.

I took a dish cloth and started drying the dishes and packing it away. “We had fun, it was crowded though. What is the mural about?”

“I don’t know why my sons have never asked me that question. You are always so interested in the things I get myself into. Where are they in anyway?”

I wondered if she knew about Chris and Alisa. “They are probably getting the sea off. Chris has a date or something and Daniel and I are going to have movie night at my house. You didn’t answer about the mural. Is there a reason for that?” She had this look that said that she didn’t really want to talk about it. “Is something wrong?”

“Not at all, it’s just sort of hard to explain. When the company asked me to do it, they only gave me one word and I had to work with it. The word was ‘Forgiveness’, and do you know how hard it is to paint that?”

“I could imagine, but I guess you pulled it of.” I packed the last of the dishes away. “Mrs. W. You are the most talented painter I know, I know you will kick ass.”

“I hope so. The whole thing is working on my nerves. Did you say Chris was going on a date?”

I thought she knew. I know the boys tell her everything. “Yes, het met a girl. She is nice … I uh guess.” I played with the dish cloth. Where is Daniel? “Daniel said MR. W. is away on business. Would you and the boys like to join us for a picnic by the lake tomorrow? My mom said she will call, but she has been out of it these last few days.”

Before she could answer Daniel was back with Chris on his heals. “Hallo mom. I would like to go tomorrow and I know you could use the day off.” He stepped around the counter and gave her a hug. How was your day?” He looked so sweet giving his mother attention and not be shy about it.

“My day was good. Would you be driving Chris to his date?”

“It’s at her house so I will drop him off and pick him up again.” He made way for Chris to say goodnight to his mother. “I’m watching movies at Em’s.” Daniel came to stand next to me and took my hand.
