A big thank you to all my readers! I hope you're enjoying the story so far!
TW: mentions of violence. Very slightly, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Seungcheol was at work the next day when he received the call. Absorbed in reading some case files, he picked up his ringing desk phone immediately.
"Choi Seungcheol?" a deep voice asked.
"Yes, this is he. Who is this?"
Ignoring the question, the man continued. "It appears you seem to have taken an interest in some of our business activities. Do you know who you're dealing with?"
As the man talked, Seungcheol noticed that his voice was modified. Masked, rather.
"Let me guess, you're one of Congressman Kim's associates, aren't you?"
"Very good," the man said, patronizingly. "Now, that you understand, it's in your best interest to drop what you're doing right now."
"Or what? Let me guess, you'll make my life hell, is that it?" Seungcheol said, unwavering. "You know this isn't the first time I've had to deal with a bunch of rowdies."
The man snickered on the line. "We're just doing our business. Everyone needs to make a living somehow." He paused. "And as for what we'll do...you'll wish you were in hell."
~
"I'm sorry, what?!"
Seungcheol nodded, sipping his coffee slowly. "I mean, this isn't the first time this has happened. Remember when we were investigating that model?"
Jihoon shivered, picking up his coffee for warmth. "I don't even understand how you can get that involved with drug lords anyways."
Seungcheol shrugged. "It is what it is, I guess."
"So he really threatened you, huh?"
Seungcheol gave a small nod.
"Are you okay?"
Seungcheol nodded again. "I'm just not sure what to do. I'm worried..."
"For yourself?"
Seungcheol shook his head, wordlessly pointing to the bedroom. Jihoon's mouth formed an O, understanding.
"But on the other hand, I mean, he's done some really horrible things, Jihoon."
"I know. "
"I mean, can you imagine being ripped out of your own home, beaten, and eventually...you know. "
"Didn't I just say I knew?" Jihoon said, teeth gritted. "Don't remind me."
"My blood boils every time I think of it. It's just so...inhumane." Seungcheol rubbed his chin. "And all for what? That's the question. There has to something. "
Jihoon shrugged. "Maybe they're just sadists. Brutes. Uneducated baffoons," he said, earning him an eye-roll from Seungcheol.
"Not helping, Jihoon."
Jihoon got up from the kitchen table. "Wasn't trying to." He wandered out of the room, coffee cup in hand, into the living room. "So this is the new crib, huh? It's huge."
Seungcheol smirked. "The joys of a joint income. You should try it. "
"Yeah, yeah. Working on it." Jihoon began to inspect the gaming station, fascinated by the shiny new console. "Hey Seungcheol, could I borrow-" he began, but froze mid-sentence. "Oh Jeonghan hyung! Morning!"
